Mid July harvest in the northeast Co northwest Ks, Southwest Ne area limits most grain crops other than proso millet. Winter wheat that fall works well.

@farmerjim13 @wingfieldfarms WB9303 is the earliest maturity I have worked with thus far. Irrigated has been consistent yields and dryland is up and down with spring rainfall. Similar in success to winter wheat planted following dryland corn. Advantage is you don’t have to make decision until march to plant.

@realWillSieck @laneallenw Yes, Flexking made a sweep drill. They were quite the fad in the late 70’s early 80’s. The first large air seeders in the area. Most were using them for continuous crop wheat seeding not summerfallow. Timing with rain or wet winters made some look genius and others fools.

@laneallenw Hoe drills usually ride on the plow pan. Really hard to gauge depth. Any less than that you are most likely dropping in dry dirt that will not pack! All about how deep you farmed all summer long with them.

@emmapkate When we live in an environment of 9 to 25 inches of rain a year it is impossible to plan on a crop 2 out of three years. Let alone waste soil moisture. The high plains is very unforgiving. Water conservation is key and burning up our reserve with a cover crop is a big fail.
