5๏ธโฃ Things in an NBA Refereeโs pregame routine during the Playoffs:
๐ Arrive to the arena 1.5-2 hours before the game. This allows the crew plenty of time to start their warm up routine, meet with security and NBA Referee operations personnel attending the game and check in with the NBA Replay Center before going out on the court. Crews have this same arrival time during the regular season.
๐ Stretching and time with an Athletic Trainer: Like the players, Referees put their bodies through rigorous work when officiating an NBA game. Many Referees work with an athletic trainer on their individual needs to get their bodies ready for the game ahead both during the regular season as well as the Playoffs.
๐ Put on the blue jacket: All NBA Referees selected for the Playoffs are given a blue jacket to wear during pregame warmups. During the regular season, their pregame warmup jackets are black and during the NBA Finals they are white.
๐ Test their whistles: During a Referees on-court pregame routine, they will check in with the scorerโs table to test that their whistle is synced with the game clock. The game clock automatically stops at the sound of a Refereeโs whistle.
๐ Captainโs meeting: Before tip-off, the Referee crew meets with both team captains at center court for a captains meeting.
Many of the pregame routines an NBA Referee has during the Playoffs are the same routines they have during the regular season.
