(Smith) Being an advocate for your students is so important. Many students are able to get by unnoticed but it is our job to get them the help they need and ultimately teach them to self-advocate. We need to give our students the tools they need to learn. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
(Smith) The actions of teachers can make all difference in a child's life. A teacher should never underestimate what their encouragement and support can mean to one child. Smith challenges us to be all we can be for our students. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
(Smith) Many of us go into teaching to change the lives of our students, what we find along the way is that our students change our lives. This realization is deepened as we let ourselves "be dazzled" by how truly amazing young adolescents can be. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
Empowering students to restory gives them a voice and allows them to offer more perspectives to one story. Writing themselves in a narrative shows how important their words can be and offers them more possibilities. #csusmmiddlelevel28
We should encourage students to think critically about the text and any bias represented. Questions posed are: Who lives? Who thrives? Who tells one’s story? They offer different perspectives so students are not being impressionable to accept text says as truth#csusmmiddlelevel28
(Thomas) Brings to light that although we have come a long way, we still have a long way to go when it comes to having a diverse representation of books in our classrooms. Being conscious and aware of this will allow are students to feel seen. #csusmmiddlelevel28
Barker emphasizes students getting opportunities to use their own ideas before sharing. She also discusses the gradual releases of responsibility. Moving from dependent (teacher guided) to independent discussion led by the class, uninterrupted by the teacher. #csusmmiddlelevel28
(2/3) Love the idea of “read small, think big” and breaking it into bite size chunks. When students read small such as close reading, using annotation and writing it allows them to digest the material and then later think of the big ideas and deeper meanings. #csusmmiddlelevel28
(Baker) Creating safe spaces for students includes preparing them for success. This could mean helping them annotate texts and allowing them to test out ideas in small groups (low stakes) before gaining confidence to share out with the class. #Csusmmiddlelevel28
Students should have more exposure & focus on real world writing tasks. For example, resume building is such an important skill yet many adults do not know how to do this well. If these skills are woven into classes, we will do a better job preparing students #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
Career writing should be infused with academic writing throughout student's education. This will help students develop professional skills in written communication that many industries seek. Students can see the usefulness in their efforts and how it applies #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
(Sparks) We have been learning about integrating lessons that are relevant to our students and applicable to the real world. I was surprised to read that this is not what is happening based on studies on students level of preparedness for the workplace. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
There are many things that can be done to help struggling readers that are not being implemented. Allington provides many examples but one is high quality instruction provided all day. This includes differentiation to meet the needs of all learners. #csusmmiddlelevel28
It is evident that more needs to be done with regards to reading intervention at the middle school level. Reading instruction typically ends in the elementary school leaving older students lacking the help they need. This is such a disservice to everyone. #csusmmiddlelevel28
(Allington) As I started subbing more often for middle schools, I saw the large amounts of struggling readers first hand. Based off reading data, an alarming one in four students will struggle with learning content from grade level material (NCES, 2009).#csusmmiddlelevel28
Teachers can plan classroom work that allow students to be in their zone of proximal development. Offering students meaningful choices, real world connections to reading and relevant material are all ways to create an engaging environment. (3/3) #csusmmiddlelevel28

(Afflerbach, Harrison) Motivating and engaging students is arguably the most important part of teaching. Motivated and engaged readers not only willingly strive to understand more but find pleasure in reading. So what can be done to promote this? (1/3) #csusmmiddlelevel28
There are so many resources and tools to enhance 21st-century workplace skills for students. When integrating blended learning students are provided authentic learning experiences, use of creativity and ability to have a deeper understanding. #csusmmiddlelevl28
(Styslinger, Walker & Lenker)I was so inspired and could not help but write down all the names of the apps listed. Students can demonstrate their comprehension level through different scaffolds and modalities such as comic books and sock puppet stories. #csusmmiddlelevel28
