With Pi Day just around the corner, let’s remember what Pi is all about.
After washing your hands thoroughly, cut the crust off a pizza pie and lay it across four others. You’ll see that the crust spans a little more than 3 pies. That’s Pi ≈ 3.14.
But that’s not all! (Cont’d)
I2R- readrates should be improved to ensure that students can devote their attention to thinking while reading. Repeated readings are a great way to improve upon these rates but type of text used must be considered & corrective fb must be given prior to reread #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
R2R- the environment is which our students read can have a lot to do with how much they comprehend. An encouraging & relaxing environment can ease their affective filter from blocking this comprehension from taking place. Reading aloud can also be a benefit. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
Birmingham- Jenny’s story from resisting learning English to being an advanced student in English, and eventually becoming a bilingual student teacher is amazing. Her journey seems very similar to mine, because I myself struggled to be able to read at my...#CSUSMMiddleLevel28
Birmingham: I wish I had more qualitative data about people similar to Jenny who might not have had any accommodating teachers and have fallen through the cracks as a result. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
"Every teacher is a teacher of reading and literacy as practiced in their discipline. " Never thought of teaching a student how to read a graph as literacy, but yea it is and it is important to science, math and a host of real life applications. #CSUSMMiddlelevel28
Not being a passive reader, recreating the longer story behind an elegant math principle speaks to the value of making mistakes in mathematics. Great mathematicians, like great scientists, make a lot of mistakes along the way to determining what works. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
Herein lies the gap between procedural fluency and conceptual mastery, "Don't assume that understanding each phrase, will enable you to understand the whole idea." You can learn to solve a problem by memorizing phrases, but miss the big idea behind the steps. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
"Teaching Lit"-1/2 As a future ELA teacher I struggle with just exactly what level of work I should expect out of middle schoolers, especially with writing. From what I have seen thus far the spectrum is huge. It's difficult to judge thru an 'expert' lens.. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
ReadMath- in math it is said that to understand something you must read it 1st, then write it down in your own words, then teach it to reinforce its meaning. Read it more than once if needed & break it down into chunks...take your time, make the idea your own. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
(Fisher) I’ve found that step-by-step modeling as a group/class activity, rather than just providing students with a mentor text to look at independently, has been more effective and has increased student understanding, engagement and comprehension. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
Ballenger: It is not just because of family literacy or lack of reading at home that leads to the achievement gap. It is also the teacher's own assumptions that get in the way of assessing what these students already know. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
(Matsumura) I think it’s important to gives prompts and texts to students that get them thinking deeply and critically about whatever the subject is. With this, it’s important to hear students’ ideas and thoughts. Giving them a voice is important! #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
(Jang, Conradi, McKenna & Jones) I enjoy the suggestions offered in this article to increase motivation. Students may feel more motivated when they feel that they have more control over the process (cont.) #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
1/3 Teacher modeling for in-depth and complex texts is a necessary component to reading in the classroom today, especially when pushing for more informative writing. In order to model correcting and efficiently, teachers must carefully read and study....#CSUSMMiddleLevel28
"Modeling"- Naming the struggles with comprehension and giving students strategies to use before the problem arises can provide them with the tools that will hopefully eliminate falling into frustration levels and giving up on learning the content.

Disciplinary reading, reading like a scientist, historian, or literature is a fun area for teacher modeling. I imagine a certain amount of dramatic role playing could really liven up instruction. Students might really enjoy playing along! #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
