@TCsusm I love this, Dan..this is also a great way to get and keep kids writing, making inferences, and critically thinking about texts while being imaginative.
"Ebooks"- I wonder if there was a measurable comprehension difference from those who read in other classes vs. those who read in a quiet, comfortable space, or even those that read on commute. I feel like that would be important to consider in the study #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
"Teaching Lit"-1/2 As a future ELA teacher I struggle with just exactly what level of work I should expect out of middle schoolers, especially with writing. From what I have seen thus far the spectrum is huge. It's difficult to judge thru an 'expert' lens.. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
"Seeking"- Fostering an environment and mindset in a class where students can voice that they don't understand a piece of a text gives opportunity for students to teach each other. I think this is a key aspect to teaching #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
"Building"-I like the idea of having a routine with reading. the before, during, and after model supports, scaffolds and releases students. If this happens with every reading, maybe students will be more motivated to read, and challenge themselves with texts #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
"Discussion'"-1/2 At Palomar, I had an English professor that really taught how to delve deep into meaning of texts. He changed the way I approached reading and writing in college. Our discussion were deep and challenging, butI was always walked out of class #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
@TeacherCassieL Rereading is crucial to learning and forming good comprehension. My CT and her colleagues are getting pushback by the HS teachers in their district for teaching certain novels. HS teachers are not wanting to reteach novels-but why not?? Look at the data!!

"Modeling"- Naming the struggles with comprehension and giving students strategies to use before the problem arises can provide them with the tools that will hopefully eliminate falling into frustration levels and giving up on learning the content.
#CSUSMMiddleLevel28
"Book Reports"- This clear difference between what is being taught and what is expected in the professional world needs to be highlighted more in the classroom. We must teach and model smart, professional writing to prepare for the real world.
#CSUSMMiddleLevel28
"Grades"-Choose your works wisely and be very specific about your feedback. Comments should reflect how we want to see our students grow and learn, and our feedback should guide them to the mastery of the objective of the lesson or task.
#CSUSMMiddleLevel28
"Boys"- Boys need male role models in their lives, especially in the educational world. Nurture the things boys are interested in and allow them to write about things we as adult females may find not that amazing- but encourage their writing on whatever topic
#CSUSMMiddleLevel28
"Feedback"- My CT is practicing an amazing example of this practice in her classroom thru standards based grading. The purpose is so kids can revise WHILE they write, learn thru the process.
#CSUSMMiddleLevel28
"Challenge"- When we teach students to actually identify different types of writing, this will then enhance their reading comprehension. There is a reason behind all writing!
#CSUSMMiddleLevel28
"After"- You will see the students grow when teaching them to make multiple decisions, take multiple paths and then this will result in multiple outcomes. Learning in diverse ways!
#CSUSMMiddleLevel28
"Curveballs"- The teaching of research is such an important skill. Students are never too young to learn it! It's a multi-step process that must be broken down for real comprehension; and this skill will stay with them throughout their educational career
#CSUSMMiddleLevel28
"Research"- This article is full of awesome, but I can't imagine how difficult it must be do implement all of these steps! It seems so intense, at least for myself as a new teacher-but I love this as a resource
#CSUSMMiddleLevel28
'Passion' - This idea not only ignites the learning, thinking, and writing process within the students while instilling citizenship in them as well. Such a great tool. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
