I2R- readrates should be improved to ensure that students can devote their attention to thinking while reading. Repeated readings are a great way to improve upon these rates but type of text used must be considered & corrective fb must be given prior to reread #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
R2R- the environment is which our students read can have a lot to do with how much they comprehend. An encouraging & relaxing environment can ease their affective filter from blocking this comprehension from taking place. Reading aloud can also be a benefit. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
R2R- self selected reading is so important for our students, especially for emergent bilingual students. Let them have a choice in what they find interesting and exciting. Conventional skills based, explicit instruction does not work for all. Find what works!#CSUSMMiddleLevel28
ReadMath- in math it is said that to understand something you must read it 1st, then write it down in your own words, then teach it to reinforce its meaning. Read it more than once if needed & break it down into chunks...take your time, make the idea your own. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
CriticalEng- restorying enables our readers the opportunity to become the author of what may happen next...continue the journey they finished reading and become the new author. Encourage our students to “put themselves back into the narrative” as they read!#CSUSMMiddleLevel28
RARSCIENTIST- in the development of a text set, I really like the options available for differentiation. Ease of modifications up or down would be a key aspect to make sure each student is learning at their level and staying engaged in the lesson. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
Lupo- students reading for less than 15% of observed time in SS & ELD must change. What’s worse is that 2/3 was spent listening to tapes or to teachers reading aloud. We must provide our students with ample opportunities as well as diverse texts to read. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
Barker- low stakes opportunities in grouping for student discussion IS a great way to build confidence in otherwise reluctant participants. Talking about what you have read can be tough. Reading small & attention to details & making those connections is huge. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
Beers8- I like the after reading strategies of scales & retelling to help students better comprehend what they have just read. Scales encourages discussion of why they made their choices & retellings provide scaffolds to help students thoughts, ideas & details.#CSUSMMiddleLevel28
Book report- our students are not learning the necessary writing skills needed in the business world. We must help them develop workplace skills in written communication that employers say are lacking. Inviting professionals into the class is a great start! #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
Writing2math- Love the idea of having math students journal. I truly believe it can & will help our students see their own thinking by writing about it in their own words. Great discussions will follow and deeper understanding of content will be gained. #CSUSMMiddleLevel28
Beers14- in addition to knowing our students, what they like in books & connecting them to the books teachers must also know what books are out there & what suggestions they can make. Review journals & online book lists are a great source we can use to help! #CSUSMMIDDLELEVEL28
FL2George- Beers lets George know how he became a defining moment in her life as a 1st year teacher. Now more than ever teachers demand to know what to do when kids can’t read. As teachers we don’t teach a subject, we teach specific children w/ specific needs!#CSUSMMIDDLELEVEL28
Intervention- quality classroom instruction our students receive is the most important aspect of schooling. Struggling readers need more time to read & labeling these student may provide more $$ but often results in lower quality reading instruction.#CSUSMMIDDLELEVEL28
Feedback- key is what students do with the feedback they are given. Give feedback they can use which will move their learning forward. Detective work - I look forward to using in my math classes. Effective feedback = knowing your student & their trust in you.#CSUSMMIDDLELEVEL28
BoysCanWrite- boys learn best by not simply taking in the info, but by also having the chance to talk about it. Topics of interest and relevance is key to their engagement in writing. They also could use more males to model the importance of writing! #CSUSMMIDDLELEVEL28
GWriting - Robbins “quality teaching grows out of spending time with student work.” Getting to know our students through their work will help us become better teachers. Work with them throughout the process (drafts) & less time will be spent on final papers. #CSUSMMIDDLELEVEL28
Beers5- the It Says-I Say chart is an excellent tool to help struggling students visualize what is happening in the text & connecting that to what is already in their minds. This chart allows them to “see how to think” & from those connections form inferences. #CSUSMMIDDLELEVEL28
AfterReading- after reading practices should include time for discussion as well as group work with peers. This will not only lead to a deeper understanding of the material read, but it will lead to a more informed and in depth writing piece.#CSUSMMIDDLELEVEL28
Beers4 - Love the idea of mini lessons. They can be great scaffolding for struggling students to help explain and pre load the material that will be part of the main lesson. Think alouds would greatly benefit these students who may need that extra information. #CSUSMMIDDLELEVEL28
