In May 2016 — seven years before October 7 — a kindergarten graduation was held in the Zaytoun neighborhood of Gaza City. The school was Al-Huda al-Islami Kindergarten, run by an organization the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center identifies as 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐉𝐢𝐡𝐚𝐝 (𝐏𝐈𝐉), one of the two major terror factions operating in Gaza.

The graduation performance was not songs and finger-painting. Children wore the uniforms of 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐉𝐞𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐦 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 — 𝐏𝐈𝐉’𝐬 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠. They staged a mock assault on an Israeli military position. A child simulated the capture of an Israeli soldier. The operation ended 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺. The organizers made no attempt to hide what they were staging. On the contrary: the performance was filmed in high quality and posted on YouTube for all to see.

The Meir Amit Center described it as 𝘢 𝘰𝘯𝘦-𝘵𝘰-𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵 𝘐𝘴𝘳𝘢𝘦𝘭, 𝘶𝘱 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘴. MEMRI has documented parallel graduation ceremonies at both PIJ-affiliated and H∗mas-affiliated schools across Gaza — in 2016, 2018, and 2023 — where children in fatigues ran mock raids on Israeli targets, 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐬𝐫𝐚𝐞𝐥𝐢 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬. The organizers at each event claimed the purpose was 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘮𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦. The content of the performances told a different story.

The children at that 2016 ceremony were approximately five or six years old.
