🎉 This week’s #MichiganMonday is a little different — we need YOUR creativity! 🖌️We’re designing the look for our 2026 Joint Annual Meeting with MI TWS in Flint, MI (Feb 25–27), and we want your design front and center.
🌿 Theme: RESILIENCY
💡Deadline: Thanksgiving
The South Branch Paint River is one of DNR Northern Lake Michigan Management Unit’s fixed Status and Trends sites. It is also 1 of their top management priorities to monitor the #brooktrout & #browntrout populations & potential changes to this important fishery. #MichiganMonday

Targeted surveys like this help Fisheries Division answer key management questions while also recording stream conditions — like stream velocity — to better understand and protect Michigan’s coldwater resources. ❄️ #ProtectMIWaters
🌊🚤 #MichiganMonday: Safety First on the Water 🦺
From DNR researchers tracking fish to weekend boaters, one thing unites everyone on the water: the need for safety training.
The Great Lakes may look like inland lakes, but they behave more like oceans 🌊
—with strong currents, fast-changing weather, and waves that can rival the coasts. That makes knowing how to react in emergencies, use safety gear, and practice rescue techniques even more important.

Turtles aren’t just cute—they’re vital! In Michigan’s lakes and wetlands, turtles help keep ecosystems balanced by controlling insects, scavenging dead fish, and spreading plant seeds. Protecting turtles means protecting the health of our waters. 🌊🐢
The Sport Fish Restoration Act is celebrating it's 75th anniversary. This landmark legislation has played a vital role in preserving the health, sustainability, and accessibility of the fisheries and water we all cherish.

What did she find?!
I'm so glad you asked! Following restoration, Dana and her team found that catch rates increased and anglers are traveling from further way to fish these waters. Check out her article in the Journal of #GreatLakesResearch to learn more!

Our very own Dana Castle (#MIAFS DEIJB Committee co-chair) has published her master's #research! This project sought to understand if/how angling had changed in response to the years of #restoration on the St. Clair-Detroit River System by analyzing #creel data.
Just in: @SenBrianSchatz and @SenatorWicker introduced bipartisan legislation, the Marine Aquaculture Research for America (MARA) Act of 2025 (S.2586), which would advance the development of commercial-scale open ocean #aquaculture in U.S. federal waters.
The bill would:
🐟 Establish an assessment program to evaluate commercial-scale demonstration projects.
🐟 Create a dedicated Office of Aquaculture at NOAA to coordinate federal permitting for U.S. aquaculture
🐟 Set clear timelines and establish a consolidated review process during the permitting approval process
🐟 Authorize grant funding to modernize working waterfront infrastructure in U.S. communities, including infrastructure that benefits both commercial fishing and aquaculture.
🐟 Invest in workforce training and curriculum to train the next generation of aquaculture professionals.
The expansion of #openoceanaquaculture in America would increase domestic seafood production, create jobs, support coastal economies, and reduce our seafood trade deficit. Learn more: https://t.co/tPN2DpNKqi
