Absolutely chuffed for this study from my PhD to be out at long last! Thanks to a big collaborative effort we managed to delve deep into the intricacies of bacterial zinc uptake 🧫
How does Streptococcus pneumoniae scavenge #zinc during infection? We used crystallographic, biochemical, spectroscopic and functional approaches to study the mechanism of the zinc-recruiting protein AdcA. @TheDohertyInst@UQ_SCMB@MicroMorey@RCID20

Chris Goodnow is a world-renowned immunologist. Before catching COVID in May, he was also an avid cyclist and surfer, the director of a major medical research institute, and my boss.
And then, like many other COVID patients, the virus hit his heart. https://t.co/1umibScYhR
This is a great idea and something I wish I'd had access to as a newly starting PhD student. But how to implement in Australia with our different & much less structured PhD programs? #AcademicChatter#PhD

1/2 The name Abigail Salyers might not mean much to people outside the microbiome world, but she's one of the pioneering gut microbiologists that laid the foundations for the field, and one of a number of microbiologists who are (mistakenly) underappreciated in the age of NGS.

So excited that our study showing that E. coli Nissle uses yersiniabactin as a zincophore to colonize the inflamed gut is finally out in @NatureComms https://t.co/v61PRApaht. This has been a long journey with many people involved over several years. Below is a thread.
Five quick tweets on the new variant B.1.1.529
Caveat first: data here is *very* preliminary, so everything could change. Nonetheless, better safe than sorry.
1) Based on the data we have, this variant is out-competing others *far* faster than Beta and even Delta did 🚩🚩

Recommended AZ dose interval has been shortened in Vic from 12 weeks to 6 weeks. If time to full vaccination was putting you off AZ, that is no longer a factor. Jab jab jab!
