On March 29, 1949, the U.S. intervened, backing Husni al-Za’im, the Army Chief of Staff, to seize power and end democratic governance in Syria. This CIA-backed coup plunged the country into years of political instability, triggering a series of military takeovers that ultimately paved the way for Hafez al-Assad’s rise to power in 1971, followed by his son Bashar, who was deposed just this past week.
