Finally Matriculated at the university of Oxford. Iโm grateful for the opportunity to learn, grow, and be part of this community as a DPhil student in Surgical Sciences.
Iโm profoundly grateful and deeply humbled to be ๐ป๐ฎ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฎ๐บ๐ผ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ญ๐ฑ ๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐๐ด๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐น ๐ถ๐ป๐ฑ๐๐ฐ๐๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ผ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฟ๐๐-๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฃ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ถ๐๐ ๐๐ฎ๐น๐น ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ฎ๐บ๐ฒ by ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ข๐ต๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ฐ๐จ๐ช๐ด๐ต, the internationally renowned UK- and US-based magazine dedicated to pathology and laboratory medicine.
This first-ever Hall of Fame is an enduring tribute to those whose contributions have shaped pathology and laboratory medicine over many years, recognising individuals with five or more Power List honours, as well as departed colleagues whose loss continues to be deeply felt across our professional pathology and medical laboratory community.
It is an extraordinary honour to stand alongside such giants of pathology, particularly two whose work touched me personally: Prof Christopher Fletcher (d. 2024) of the USA, a legendary soft tissue pathologist whose books and papers I first studied as a young trainee more than 20 years ago; and Prof Richard Scolyer (d. 2026) of Australia, a pioneering melanoma pathologist with whom I interacted closely online during his courageous battle with brain cancer. Finding myself in the same inaugural Hall of Fame as these two extraordinary figures is deeply moving.
What makes this Hall of Fame recognition even more surreal is discovering that Iโm the only inductee from Africa ๐ and from a low- or middle-income country among the founding 15. Proudly Kenyan! ๐ฐ๐ช
I could hardly have imagined being among such an illustrious group of just 15 honourees, even after six appearances on The Pathologist Power List (2019โ2021 and 2024โ2026). For a Kenyan pathologist who has spent over two decades leading by example and advocating for stronger pathology and laboratory medicine services in Africa, this is a humbling reminder that the pursuit of cutting-edge excellence knows no borders.
Iโm truly grateful to all my mentors, colleagues, partners, team members, family and community, including those from my humble roots in the Kibra slums, who have walked this journey with me. More recently, Iโm especially grateful to my remarkable DKL team @DKLDrKalebiLabs , who have joined me in building a homegrown, innovative and disruptive greenfield laboratory venture, advancing pathology and laboratory medicine in Africa despite considerable resource constraints.
I truly love pathology, and it remains a privilege and a blessing to contribute to patient care through scientific evidence and accurate, timely diagnoses that provide answers to patients, families and healthcare professionals, guide treatment, restore hope and save lives. Alhamdulillah! ๐คฒ๐ฝ
As I exit the annual Power List nominations and take my place in the Hall of Fame, my prayer is that this recognition inspires more young African pathologists and laboratory professionals to rise to even greater heights of global recognition through the excellence and impact of their work.
Heartfelt congratulations to all 15 inaugural inductees, and profound gratitude to The Pathologist @pathologistmag for this extraordinary honour.
