@RogerThisdell we could also track skin temperature and heart-rate measures, since somatic activations might come with subtle shifts in arousal and autonomic activity.
@RogerThisdell there's also a newer technique that uses quantum sensors (the same tech behind OPM-MEG) to record muscle activity magnetically, which may be more sensitive to muscle activity below the surface: https://t.co/oBXEOuzwER
Iโm super excited about the
1) low/non-invasive ways to direct โreadโ from brain & body in sleep & wake states, real-time endocrine sampling
2) non-invasive neurotech to adjust (โwriteโ) waking brain states
Until recently noninvasive tools were meh; now getting good fast.
@RogerThisdell super insightful (as always)!! eagerly waiting for the future article :)
i'm super interested in the empirical implications of this idea, and if this could be leveraged to study/measure meditative development
@stephen_zerfas i think there's a strong selection effect at play as well. academia selects heavily for analytical thinking, skepticism, achievement orientation, etc., traits that can can work against well-being in the absence of a contemplative practice
We are hosting a very special convening at one of the most beautiful places on earth. If you'd like to come, we've had a few last minute cancellations of scholarship attendees. That means your accommodation is free. The event is 18-19th September in Yorkshire, UK, with talks from myself, Shamil Chandaria, Morten Kringelbach, and Surya Cillo. The topic is Human Flourishing and AI. There will be a fire temple, possibly some sauna, and lots of deep inquiry with brilliant friends. More information below. Just 24 hours to apply!
@RogerThisdell@Noah_B_Clark i think a low hanging fruit study would be to expose people to different types of images (e.g. high valence vs low valence inducing), while collecting EMG data from the body, to explore how different images effect the somatic field. also comparing meditators with non-meditators
The state space of human consciousness is a design space, and we now have new tools to navigate it deliberately at new depths for the first time. Below are some thoughts on psychotechnology RnD:

@khalio@mathyouf@maisonvyg totally! i am very excited about the applications related to things like accelerating learning and skill acquisition of different kinds.
