I had the police called on me twice during COVID—just for refusing to wear a mask in a store. One of those times my hard-of-hearing mother stood right beside me. She reads lips and needs to see my mouth. They still insisted I cover it. I refused and wouldn’t leave. So they called the police as if buying groceries without a mask was a crime. Living in California under Governor Newsom was extreme. He published a “Playbook” of rules, and I studied every page so I knew my rights. When the officers arrived I told them: “I have a medical condition. I cannot breathe through that mask. According to the governor’s own Playbook, this store must clear the other customers and accommodate me.” The worst part? Store owners never read it. If someone passed out or died from being forced to wear a mask, the lawsuit would fall on them—not the state. So I prepared a document stating that if they forced me to wear a mask to shop for food and I passed out or died, they would be legally responsible. I handed it over and asked them to sign. No one would sign it. And just like that, I was able to shop without a mask.That’s how fragile the mandates were. One person willing to stand firm with a piece of paper. If more people had done the same—and if store owners had known their rights—mask requirements in grocery stores would never have taken hold.
