@LeeEvansBirding If it wasn’t for their sporting value as a gamebird there would be far less of them. The managed moorland habitat for grouse are the most productive upland areas for ground nesting birds, in particular waders. Risk of wildfires is also at far less on managed grouse moors.
@duffy1972@MerlinBirdID Stuart, ‘Merlin’ is a useful aid to bird identification but has its limitations and needs to be treated with caution. I am assuming your survey was at Oxcombe but I would seriously question Water Pipit, Horned Lark and Greater Short toed Lark.
