@ForkAndrew Cybersecurity is still overlooked by parents and teachers. It is an area that was less of a concern when parents and teachers were young and if there was no requirement to learn about it, they didn't. It must be be "accepted, implemented and assessed within our curriculum."
@ForkAndrew That would be an interesting study. My kids like to play Minecraft and I can certainly say that they learn from it. However, the level of deeper learning is not clear.
@MareBar711@ForkAndrew Peer-to-peer feedback can be just as critical as feedback from teachers. Particularly in higher education, many professors have never learned how to teach and may not know understand the value of providing quality feedback.
@DISBarker #digitaldivide is a great point! So much learning can take place using web-based searches. Students without reliable access to the technology to frequently access web-based search engines puts them at a clear disadvantage.
@joyfulledtech That is a great question. Young people pick up a lot of skills using technology and "doing their thing." If educators would understand a bit more about what students are doing on their own time, they could possibly do a better job of educating their students.
#edu800fall20#Knobel "It is increasingly imperative for teachers themselves to experience and understand what it means to be fully engaged in new literacies practices." Educators must change and cannot continue to do things as they were 20 years ago.
#edu800fall20#Knobel Literacy is becoming influenced by factors outside of school and more by the "skills, knowledge, and tools in use within social practices."
#edu800fall20#Mills "The destabilizing of ... of authoritative knowledge and expertise and the centrality of peer collaboration, mentoring, and voluntary support to members of online communities" is a huge change with New Literacy Studies. Illustrates how literacy is evolving.
#edu800fall20#Mills "Theory-driven research has been conducted in digitalized afterschool programs in the effort to bridge digital literacies across informal and formal contexts, often linking universities to local communities."
#edu800fall20#Coiro Readers need to find alternate ways to approach reading online due to the hyperlinked nature of web pages and the independence readers have to navigate from page to page.
#edu800fall20#Coiro Skilled readers draw upon prior knowledge of the topic and their prior knowledge of printed text structures and Web-based search engines.
#edu800fall20#Coiro Readers with prior knowledge make more inferences than readers who have no prior knowledge. Readers with prior knowledge have a greater ability to read between the lines.
