@DeonnaEdavis Yes and I think about all the different learning ecologies with the various combinations of environmental factors being so diverse with students learning and instructors teaching from home!
@DISBarker @ForkAndrew I love coaching for this reason. Gives the teacher a chance to choose what we want to work on and immediately put into practice what we have learned.
"If we neglect the role technology plays in instruction...we question why it was included in the instruction in the first place." This. #edu800fall20#newliteracies#karchmer-klein
@MareBar711 Yes, when we have to write about what we read, this supports both writing and comprehension. If we don't have to write about it, we might not make the effort to understand. And a larger audience is so much more effective than an audience of 1 (the teacher).
#edu800fall20#Coiro encourages researchers to look at the reciprocal relationship between reading and writing. Each process enhances the other. When writing and reading are done together, learning takes place.
@DISBarker This is so awesome. Learning from the students is so rewarding for both the teacher and the student. Giving that student the opportunity makes all the difference.
#edu800fall20#knobel Big kids learn through play too. #newliteracies allow for playing with and exploring technologies while also engaging in "serious work" After early grades in schools, students are expected to remain on task; there is rarely time for playful experimentation.
@MikePar94496949 Yes! The more students read, the more prior knowledge they accumulate. This is why we need to begin teaching these new literacies earlier than later.
@MareBar711 This is what can be so hard for teachers. We must try to give up control and allow learning to take place within the context of the instruction, content, and technologies -not just as a result of receiving information and procedures.
@MareBar711 Your question is profound. Working from home in itself has created new literacies. I feel like the "digital turn" is a "digital merry-go-round" in the aspect that it will continue to turn with the times, and our needs as students, teacher, and professionals.
#edu800fall20#mills Shifting from standardized testing and conventional ideas of "individual authorship" to collaborative assessment can be complex, but it produces high-quality academic writing. Having an audience for writing matters.
"Friendship-driven" practices involve establishing and growing social network of peers whose relationships are important to us. "Interest-driven" networks involve outside connections for common specialized interests. These networks can facilitate learning #edu800fall20#mills
When we use new technologies we can produce and share documents and text more rapidly and easily than ever before, which means that encoded language becomes increasingly multimodal in nature. Conventional views of reading and writing are no longer sufficient. #edu800fall20#mills
"The best solutions result from collaborative groups who bring diverse, multiple perspectives to problems," especially when dealing with a dynamic topic such as literacy which is rapidly changing and growing in complexity #profound#edu800fall20#leu
Teachers also need scaffolding for multimodal learning. Tools that are too complex will not be used where new literacies are required, but PD is not provided. If teachers have to learn these without support, it may not happen. PLCs help. #edu800fall20#leu
