STATEMENT FROM COUNCILWOMAN VERNIKOV ON TODAY’S BUDGET VOTE

While today’s vote on a $125.8 billion budget avoids some of the worst possible outcomes, such as uniformly raising property taxes, raiding the rainy day fund, and defunding law enforcement, and while I’m happy to see an increase in Parks Enforcement Patrol and funding for libraries, I cannot in good conscience support this budget.

It comes as no surprise Mayor Mamdani refused to fund the fifth firefighter & flip-flopped on his promise to increase NYPD’s headcount by 580 police officers while simultaneously misdirecting millions to his socialist pet projects, prioritizing ideology and his allegiance to his radical base over the public safety of every-day New Yorkers.

Those new police officers could’ve helped immensely with the ongoing protests that not only brought chaos, fear, and disorder to our streets, but have also overwhelmed and overstretched our police department.

Of course, the Socialists in the Council are happy!

Further, amid a disturbing rise in hate crimes, particularly antisemitic hate crimes, this budget failed to fund the much-needed Brooklyn District Attorney's Hate Crime Prevention Bureau. Brooklyn consistently records the most net hate crimes of any borough, yet was notably EXCLUDED from resources needed to meaningfully fight hate crimes.

We cannot continue to spend MORE taxpayer dollars while offering New Yorkers LESS & LESS.

This is why I voted NO on today's budget.
