These oral histories will become a resource for social historians … as well as providing us all with fascinating insights into the varied life-experiences and ambitions of Mikindani’s people.

In 1961 Tanganyika eventually gained its Uhuru (Freedom). The symbol adopted for the newly independent country of #Tanzania 𝘔𝘸𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘸𝘢 𝘜𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘶 (Torch of Freedom) was first lit on #MountKilimanjaro on Independence Day, paraded every year by runners on a different route.

The interviews are conducted in the languages of the participants, not only #Swahili but also other local dialects. Funding is presently being sought by the Museum to compile written transcripts, together with English translations, of all the full-length recordings. Many 1hr+.

@MikindaniMuseum We recovered French Earthwares from Mikindani dated to the second half of the 19th century, a compelling material link to their Indian Ocean colonies.

In 1866 #DavidLivingstone landed at #Mikindani at the start of his last African journey. His reports of the slave trade horrified Europe. In 1873 Britain forced Sultan Barghash the Zanzibari ruler of Swahili coast, to start the process that brought slavery here to an end

Perhaps they became pearl divers in the Gulf soldiers in the Omani army or workers on salt pans of w. Asia. Many were made to serve in rich houses. The French took them to plantations in Mauritius & Réunion. Portuguese galleons took them on 3 month voyage to colonies in Americas
