🇺🇦 First in. Often unseen. Always beyond the line. Today is Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces Day.
May 27 marks the Day of Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces (SOF) @SOF_UKR — and the date itself tells a story.
For the second year running, SOF celebrates on May 27 rather than the old date of July 29.
The change, established by Presidential decree in May 2025, honours the very first victory of what would become Ukraine’s SOF: on May 27, 2014, special forces operators led the clearance of the new terminal of Donetsk Airport — entering first, destroying dozens of enemy fighters and their equipment at minimal cost, and delivering a decisive tactical and moral blow to the enemy.
That operation set the pattern for everything that followed.
Who they are
The SOF is a distinct branch of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, comprising special purpose units, the Resistance Movement, psychological operations units, Deep/Middle Strike units, and combat and logistics support.
Where they’ve fought
SOF warriors have taken part in every defining battle of the Russian-Ukrainian war. From the occupation of Crimea, through the hardest battles of the ATO and JFO eras — Donetsk and Luhansk airports, Savur-Mohyla, Sloviansk, Ilovaisk, Debaltseve — to the full-scale invasion that continues today.
In this war alone: the Battle of Kyiv. The defence of Chernihiv and Sumy. The liberation of Snake Island and the “Boyko Towers” in the Black Sea. The Kharkiv counteroffensive. The liberation of Kherson and the right bank of the Dnipro. Bakhmut. Avdiivka. Chasiv Yar. Vovchansk. The operation in Russia’s Kursk oblast. And many more.
What makes them different
— Always beyond the line. SOF operators are the first into enemy rear areas — by land, from the air, over water, and underwater. They routinely carry out missions others consider impossible.
— The Resistance Movement builds agent networks on occupied territory, organises sabotage, destroys enemy logistics and equipment, and supports liberation operations from inside.
— Psychological operations units fight in a different dimension of the battlefield — studying how the enemy thinks and running influence operations against him, on the front line and deep in his rear.
— Deep and Middle Strike components work every day to ensure Russia no longer feels safe anywhere inside its own territory.
It was SOF who carried the war onto the enemy’s territory. And it is SOF who continue, every day, to expand the geography where the occupier cannot feel safe.
The details of most of their operations remain classified. That is exactly how it should be. The successes the public will never hear about are, in many cases, the ones that matter most.
To every operator of Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces — the seen and the unseen, the named and the nameless — today a nation salutes you.
🇺🇦 Slava Ukraini. Glory to the Special Operations Forces.
