Happy birthday, Daddy. Thank you for being a bold purveyor of true peace. Thank you for living with purpose and for radically lifting the power of love. Thank you for believing that we can defeat injustice without destroying each other. Thank you for your courage and strategic, compassionate action. Thank you for teaching me so much, even now. I remember you today, on your 97th birthday. I remember you always.

As a human rights defender and head of the Center for Civil Liberties, Oleksandra Matviichuk believes that human rights and freedom will never be protected if we leave their defense solely to activists, politicians, or experts. It is an obligation for ordinary people in every corner of the world. While laws and institutions can be built by those in power, the values of society will always prevail.
Driven by a strong sensitivity to injustice, she went to law school to protect human rights. After graduating, she started working at the center in 2007, when it was established. For years, Matviichuk has led the center’s work on legal reforms, public oversight of law enforcement and the judiciary, youth education, and international solidarity programmes in Ukraine and the OSCE region.
The Center for Civil Liberties was awarded the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize for fighting for human rights and democracy.
