The world added a historic 510 gigawatts of renewable power capacity in 2023, up 50% from a year before
Under current policies & market trends, global renewable capacity is set to be 2.5 times higher by 2030, not far off the COP28 goal of tripling

Many views on COP and its outcomes, but certainly a historic one to see #energyefficiency feature so prominently. The ambition to double efficiency progress this decade is now an agreed outcome. What does this mean? 🧵
It's Day 7 here at #COP28 and parties were debating fossil fuel phase out / energy package in the Global Stocktake until late last night.
My summary: At the end of the first week of COP, the opponents of fossil fuel phase out have revealed themselves 🧵
Today at 15h30 GST at @COP28_UAE and @EC_AVService we will launch the Global Pledge to TRIPLE renewables and DOUBLE energy efficiency by 2030.
Planet-wide goals that bring us closer to a clean energy future for all.
120 countries are on board.
Join the movement.
🗣 “The energy sector is taking early steps to harness the power of AI to boost efficiency & accelerate innovation”
In a new commentary, @vida_rozite, @MillerJDavid & Sungjin Oh explore how AI can support efficient, clean & resilient power systems 👉 https://t.co/G2cKFLr4Wy
With COP28 approaching fast, the @IEA has been working with govts, the European Commission and COP Presidency to agree goal of doubling energy efficiency progress this decade.
Today we released a short commentary on what this entails 🧵 1/8

SUNDAY THREAD:
This week the IEA updated their groundbreaking 1.5 degree Net Zero report. I was lucky enough to be a peer reviewer, and I want to explain in my own words what I think it means..
Yes we can still keep to 1.5 degrees! Were you ready to give up? So many people were
We were very pleased to work with the Government of India on the #G20 Voluntary Action Plan on Doubling the Rate of Energy Efficiency Improvement by 2030; and delighted to see it referenced in the Leaders' Declaration https://t.co/SMA9OTZqHb
Keeping cool on a hotter planet has major implications for energy systems
Not getting it right has disastrous consequences - an enormously important topic as heat domes sit over vast swathes of the planet
This is not going away.
The world is baking in extreme heat – causing demand for air conditioners & the electricity used to power them to surge
Our new commentary explores why stronger action on energy efficiency is crucial to keep people cool without warming the planet further: https://t.co/nh4eYLTPWO
All eyes now on COP28, where governments - and the UAE Presidency - will try to formalise the target
COP28 President has already made the target part of one the event's four pillars

📢 International momentum is building on #EnergyEfficiency
Yday G20 members (>80% global GDP) agreed to double the rate of efficiency progress by 2030 🤯
...building on agreement between 45 govts last month at @IEA conference in Versailles 🧵
https://t.co/LFlbuLRY7U
Achieving this would reduce
📉 global energy demand by 190 EJ
☁️ global CO2 emissions by 11Gt
...both almost 1/3 of current total
It is also a vital step on the path to Net Zero - enabling lower-cost, more equitable decarbonisation in 2030+

The IEA says priorities to 2030 are:
1. Double energy efficiency
2. Triple renewable capacity
Last week, the COP delegation put both on the table. This is an awesome proposal.
Why is no-one talking about this?
We need to make sure these are agreed at COP..
Wow! Wow! Wow!
North Atlantic sea surface temperature anomalies are going vertical again. And yes, I needed to extend the y-axis.
Yesterday's temperature of 24.49°C (76.08°F) was 4.2σ above the 1991-2020 mean. The previous high for July 17 was 23.71°C (74.68°F) in 2020.
