Many people commemorated D-Day. But June 7 is also an important date: In 1863, at Milliken's Bend, poorly armed and trained former slaves held off a Confederate attack on U.S. Grant's supply lines — proving that they could and would fight https://t.co/SGgAPlj5dl

So many who lie here are from the U.S. Colored Troops - many of them marked simply as "Unknown." Undoubtedly some of them fought and died at Milliken's Bend. https://t.co/w2eTDU8GkV #Vicksburg#BlackHistory

Adeline Cunningham spent 14 years of her life in bondage, and first tasted a life beyond slavery on June 19, 1865 as US troops landed in Galveston, TX.
Cunningham is pictured on her porch in San Antonio, nearly 72 years after she first celebrated her emancipation, or Juneteenth.
@MillikensBend was a relatively minor engagmement, but it raised the esteem in which Black soldiers were held, further convincing leaders in the North to expand the number of units of US Colored Troops.
Frederick Douglass delivered a speech at @ArlingtonNatl at the first official commemoration, emphasizing the importance of honoring those who sacrificed their lives: “dark & sad will be the hour to this nation when it forgets to pay grateful homage to its greatest benefactors.”
#MemorialDay, also known as Decoration Day, is an annual holiday where our nation pauses to honor the service and sacrifice of military heroes who gave their lives for our freedoms. #ANationsStory#APeoplesJourney

@CivilWarOTD Small correction - Harrison's Cavalry served as scouts for CS. The day before, June 6, Lieb had two companies of the 10th Illinois Cav with him - but they had a feud with the African Brigade. https://t.co/fKvTptp6Ea
