Officers are concerned for the whereabouts of Amy Brockie who is 14 years old and is missing from the Newtongrange area. She has been missing since 13:30 hrs Tuesday 1st September 2026.
Amy is described as being 5 feet 5 inches tall, white Scottish in appearance, with long dark straight hair. She was last seen wearing black leggings and a crop top.

The people of Rouen bought the right to eat butter in Lent, and the money built a tower that is still standing.

Lent meant no meat, no eggs, no cheese and no butter, because all four came off an animal. That is workable in the south of Europe, where you cook in olive oil and always have. In Normandy there was no olive oil. There were cows, there was rain, and there was butter in everything, and the alternative fat available to an ordinary household for six weeks of the year was nothing at all.

So the Church sold dispensations. Pay the fee, get the permission, keep the butter.

Enough of Rouen paid that the cathedral put the proceeds into building work. The foundation stone of the south west tower went down in 1485. It was finished in 1506, it cost 24,750 livres tournois, and it has been called the Tour de Beurre ever since, by everybody, including the cathedral.

You can stand in the square in Rouen this afternoon and look at two hundred and fifty feet of Flamboyant Gothic that exists because a city refused to give up butter for six weeks and was willing to pay for the exemption in cash.

A population under enormous religious pressure would rather hand over money than hand over the butter, which is a vote, taken across a whole city, on how much the stuff was worth to people who worked outdoors and needed the calories.

And the institution took the money. It had defined butter as an indulgence, forbidden it on that basis, and then priced it. Nobody was pretending the fat was dangerous. They were selling access to a thing everybody wanted and everybody knew was good.

Six centuries later the fat is on trial again, on a different charge, in a different building, and every generation that runs this argument is convinced it is the first one to have the idea.

At least the medieval version gave you a receipt, and a tower.
