@lymanstoneky Yeah and the spelling bee is the perfect example as it's widely ridiculed in the UK. (Those silly Yanks think it makes their kids erudite, but really all they are doing is memorizing and accurately recalling a large quantity of dry information. Which is useless, obviously)
this is incredible (derogatory)
ai is one of the greatest boons to adhd by reducing activation energy & closing the idea-execution gap
yet the adhd subreddit has banned any & all discussions involving AI, and will permaban you if you attempt to circumvent the ban
what a show of self-defeating virtue signaling & puritanism
@jaketropolis@atlanticesque The UK arguably went the other way on this, after '95 there was a turn against serials and miniseries, and towards "American" style syndication-friendly standalone episodes. Dr Who is the most obvious example but shows like Spooks were also pitched that way.
@JustinLardinois@MuseZack I don't think Tokyo Drift counts, it came out before F&F turned into a Bond-style series and was just doing the 00s standalone sequel thing like Bring It On, Step Up, eyc
@johndrewmarkley Weren't the Caribbean plantations more lucrative? It could have gone the other way: American planters would not have been so wedded to slavery as an economic system if they were part of the British empire, and so could easily switch to exploiting Indian wage-labourers.
@xsphi Wouldn't FTL undermine these kind of dark forest arguments the same way it would causality in general? Like if war-like aliens from Andromeda have developed FTL, does it matter what date the invention would have appeared to occur from our perspective?
@jdcmedlock@ArmandDoma Tbf it's already been suspended once so the long run is fairly nominal. There is an extremely stupid timeline possible where we never officially repeal it but use regular fallow years to stop it blowing up.
@jjl8813@ArmandDoma It guaranteed slow but steady pension increases that their predecessors would be forced to abandon. And uk pensions were relatively low
This is the most remarkable story Ray Bradbury ever shared with me. He told it late at nigh, sitting in his den of antiquities and mementos. Take five minutes to read this. Itโs pure magic.

@mtkonczal Is purely the length that makes the US version feel cosy/cute. You know however dark an episode gets, everyone will be back next week, next year, like nothing happened.
@arctotherium42 Suspect it was, but that he's since asked Claude what the track record is for this kind of 5D legal judo, and didn't like the answer https://t.co/zsLm6ejq7J
@segyges@bubbling_creek@tenobrus Have you told your lawyer that you are strategically provoking a defamation lawsuit, because you think that during discovery your target will have to hand over evidence that he is a nonce? Because you are not the first person to have come up with this genius move.
Me, in a time machine, to Eliezer in 2006: The year is 2026. You stand back to back with Bernie Sanders. Peter Thiel has named you the Antichrist.
EY-2006: Oh no. Did somebody invent pharmacological mind control and use it on me, or-
Me: Nvidia was on the verge of destroying all things. You had no choice.
EY-2006: Are we talking about the computer graphics card manufacturer, or an unrelated supervillian named "Invidia"?
Me: The former. It turned out that computer graphics cards contained a surprising amount of world-destroying potential. All attempts at hindering the reckless exploitation of the Graphic Card Force for corporate profit were stymied by the far left, which feared that any attempts to regulate them might lead to regulatory capture. Other attempts were made to prevent Nvidia from selling to foreign companies that resold to communist China, but those attempts were blocked by the far right. Nvidia is now a $5.5 trillion company.
EY-2006: ...What are politics like in 2026, exactly?
Me: In other news that is mostly unrelated, the decision theory paper you're currently working on will accidentally spark off a transgender vegan murder cult.
EY-2006: A WHAT? Why? How? Why?
Me: Millions know your name as the greatest of heroes, millions more as the greatest of villains, and other millions know you solely as the greatest author of Harry Potter fanfiction.
EY-2006: This is beginning to strain credulity.
Me: The New York Post will probably soon publish a story claiming that you keep a harem of submissive mathematicians. Sadly, they will be lying.
EY-2006: I'm going to stop believing you now.
Me: All of this is taking place under the ominous shadow of Donald Trump.
@standforself@kmewisfc Steve O from Jackass went to one, as did Bill Irwin and for some reason Penn Jillette. Rowan Atkinson didn't though, which really makes you question the value of the whole enterprise.

@obversers The cost disease argument seems stronger here than for architecture, those dresses were designed for women with servants. Modern upper middle class women can afford the upfront costs but not the wardrobe assistant, specialist dry cleaning, etc.
@fitzr1189 Yes but also come on, she was also setting her up with a slam dunk Harvard application letter. At my tragically underfunded primary school I taught the staff that clever children also need support, at my extremely selective secondary I
@dense_dark_orb@pegobry_en AI has already persuaded a few humans to eg: kill themselves. Evidently at least some people are stupid enough to get pig butchered by a toaster, if human survival relies on none of them ever getting put in a critical role...
@rafom@alreadydawn Presumably because of the diaspora it would not have been possible for it to do as much damage as the burying of the scholars. Were there any texts for which every copy in the mainland was destroyed?
