We work to repair ancient buildings and Churches. Wkshop in #Frome#Somerset - see also @natchjourneyman for our book - The Stonemason-published-@johnmurrays
I’ve been asked to make a promo video at work by my publisher, so I thought I would do some extra content - shot at St Mary’s, Hemington. Somerset, which we look after for the @TheCCT#churchgoing @SPAB1877 https://t.co/e0UV3jQulF
We @MinervaStone are busy putting this really loooong C18th barn back together. New wall plate, purlins, rafters, lath under 2500 new pantiles & tons of lime repointing.
If anyone would like a lifesized copy of a Romanesque Kilpeck serpent - DM me and I'll scratch my head over a price - won't be cheap mind as a good few hours needed.
Nell & Lucy working their gilding & decorative wonders at St Marys Steeple Ashton. 24 carat gold leaf onto a 18 hour size - the background is Keim9006 cobalt blue.
We are still looking for help on various interesting projects around Wiltshire & Somerset - training will be given. Do spread the word or get in touch [email protected] 👍
We’re looking for a fit youngster to help out on some of our church jobs over the summer. Lots of labouring, heavy lifting, working at height as well as basic training in lime work & building conservation. Must be able to drive. DM me.
I’m measuring up with the scaffolders at St Mary’s, Steeple Ashton. It’s one of the finest Perpendicular churches in the country. Pevsner described it as "fairly bristling with pinnacles – a gay and fantastical sight" I’ll post a thread of work updates here👇
Yesterday was spent opening up the parapet of West Huntspill ⛪️ on the edge of the #Somerset Levels. This is a nodal point for wildlife. A Marsh Harrier and Peregrine flew by. It’s a roost for Egrets and home to the rarest mammal in Britain - the Grey Long eared Bat
Peter the churchwarden brought this piece of copper alloy to show me as I was sweeping up yesterday. “My son found this in yon field and I thought you should see it before you go” @findsorguk reported that it was from a Limoges enamel Reliquary dated about 1180.
The C15th #Easter sepulchre at S Pool #Devon is rather rudely occupied by the tomb and effigy of Thomas Briant, rector there in the early C16th. At the back of the recess is a defaced carving of the Resurrection. Repaired & recorded by us @MinervaStone
Our #ancientplaster specialist Clare Venables RVM has been demonstrating her craft on the first day of the forgotten sculptural material conference hosted by @BritishAcademy, more papers and demos tomorrow.
Our first panel discussion of the #AncientPlaster conference, chaired by @emma_calliope, is focused on the material of plaster and its working properties.
The panellists are expert artistic practitioners who use plaster in life casting, piece-moulding & modelling processes.
https://t.co/JXBTEYoLMM… A catch up of our work over the past 30 years & what we have recently been up to. It covers 🦇 some very rude graffiti, craft skills and lots of ancient churches & medieval bridges.
Our project for the @TheCCT at St Mary’s Hemington continues a pace with the tower scaffolding nearly down & the lime work all done before winter kicks in.
