If anyone had a right to question whether our democracy was worth redeeming, it was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Because in the face of billy clubs and lynchings, poll taxes and literacy tests, he never gave in to violence, never waved a traitorous flag or gave up on our country.
Found it fascinating that the church initial sign was carved onto the brick of the church reminds me of the engravings of the tombstone at Plateau Cemetery @dffaaht1#Afrusa20
These are tombstones that resides here in Mobile’s Plateau Cemetery, that houses the graves of what we know as the last enslaved to migrate to the US on the Clotilda @dffaaht1#AFRUSA
I want to speak directly to the Black women in our country. Thank you. You are too often overlooked, and yet are asked time and again to step up and be the backbone of our democracy. We could not have done this without you.
That is what I got from the quote. Many blacks suffered from slavery and segregation. Sacrificed their lives by going to war, protesting, and fighting. And many has lost their life to slavery, lynching, hate crimes, and police brutality for the freedom of oppression. #AFRusa20
This potion of Frederick Douglass quote stood out to me because this part speaks volume not only to the past but also the present and future. It symbolize how many blacks had to sacrifice and die in the Civil War, Civil Rights, BLM, riots in Tulsa and the list goes on #Afrusa20
As did Cudjo and the rest of the descendants of the Clotilda who had to pay Timothy Meaher for the very land they worked on for free, but as a community they were able to establish their Africa town.
@JanuaryAmya @BoulerKatie Many slaves were used to perform medical practices to perfect modern medicine. Many female slave’s were abused by J. Marion Sims, who was name the “Father of Surgery”, by using enslaved women body to develop life saving surgeries. #Afrusa20
It was the fact that New Orleans creole descendants( as well as Mardi Gras) was more popularized there than in Mobile. So interesting with the connection of those two cities. #AFRusa20
Fact: Mobile had the largest population of free Blacks and more than likely they were Creole because most men settlers would be in the area than European women so the men would have children with African and the Natives. #AFRusa20 (only thought creole individuals were from N.O.)
Many slaves and hired help in Mobile would travel to their owners home, more than like they would travel from (Texas Hill) known now as Texas Street. #Afrusa20
