Today, on the way to school, Gavin and I had a talk about time.
He told me that a friend of his, who is 11, receives approximately 500 Snapchats a day. That friend looks at all of those Snapchats every day. I asked Gavin if he realized how much time that took for him to do that. Gavin said not much time- probably only about 10 minutes over the course of the day.
I took the opportunity to teach my kid about cumulative time. I asked him if he knew what 10 minutes a day over 365 days equals. He told me that would equal 3650 minutes. Or approximately 60 hours. His eyes got very big when I asked him if he thought spending 60 hours a year on Snapchat was a good use of time.
I I asked him what value Snapchat actually adds to his life. And he said nothing. It’s just a way to pass the time. And so I asked him if he pass the time instead hitting tees or say, reading a book or studying for your test, do you think that would add value to your life. Do you think that you would become a better baseball player or a better student with 60 extra hours of practice? and he said yes, absolutely.
The end result was him understanding that we don’t want to take away from ourselves the small joys that we have every day. Like a few minutes of video games, or texting with our friends. But that we need to be aware that small increments of time, over the course of time, becomes big increments of time. And that these big increments of time can have much more of a detrimental effect on our lives than we are seeing on a day-to-day basis. We have to think about the big picture sometimes too.
A big lesson for my 11-year-old on a Wednesday morning ride to school. But a very good one for him to learn young ❤️
After 5 1/2 hours @HurstBaseball walks it off in the bottom of the “20th inning” to beat Slippery Rock, 2-1. Mercyhurst used 8 pitchers and Slippery Rock 6, to get through what I assume is the longest game in PSAC⚾️ history. @bigdonkey47@ESPNAssignDesk@JomboyMedia#SCtop10
It was a great morning playing and meeting with coaching staff at Mercyhurst University which included a tour by former All American players Landon DiBeradin, Tim Quinn and
Christian Minto!
