A maharani who lived like myth, and jewels that turned her presence into legend.

Maharani Sita Devi of Baroda was one of the most iconic figures of 20th-century Indian royalty, celebrated for her flamboyant lifestyle, global social presence, and extraordinary collection of high jewellery. Often compared to contemporary Western socialites of her era, she moved effortlessly between royal tradition and modern cosmopolitan glamour, becoming a symbol of princely India’s final golden age.

Her lifestyle was defined by an almost theatrical sense of luxury. Based between India and Europe, she maintained a vast Parisian wardrobe of custom-made chiffon saris, each carefully coordinated with matching accessories. Her residences reflected the same attention to detail, with rooms dedicated entirely to fashion and jewellery, underscoring a level of personal opulence rarely seen even among royalty of her time.

A devoted client of Van Cleef & Arpels, she became known within the maison for her distinctive taste and bold commissions. Her jewellery collection extended beyond conventional pieces, reportedly including not only necklaces and earrings but also unusual bespoke objects crafted in precious metals. Her relationship with the house was so personal that she was affectionately referred to by them as “Mrs. Brown,” a reference to her striking appearance and commanding presence.

Among her most remarkable pieces was an emerald and ruby necklace composed of 31 vivid emeralds and 13 cabochon rubies, interwoven with brilliant-cut diamonds. This jewel exemplified the aesthetic world she inhabited—bold, saturated in colour, and designed to be seen in motion, reflecting both power and theatrical elegance.

After her death, many pieces from her collection entered the international auction market, including at Mobilier de Monaco in 1974. Today, Maharani Sita Devi is remembered not only as a royal figure, but as a cultural force who transformed jewellery into personal expression, redefining what princely luxury could look like in the modern world.

17th Century CE, posy ring bearing the inscription, “I long to have but blush to crave.”

The inner band is hand-engraved with the romantic English verse: "I long to have but blush to crave."

Derived from the French word poésy (poetry), posy rings were popular from the late medieval period through the 18th century as private love tokens. The message was deliberately placed on the interior because it was believed that wearing the words directly against the skin magnified the emotional impact and intimacy of the phrase.

The exterior band prominently showcases a classic Fede motif, depicting two hands clasping a central heart.

The design stems from the ancient Roman ritual dextrarum iunctio (the joining of right hands), which initially sealed legal contracts and alliances. By 17th-century England, this aesthetic evolved directly into a symbol of marital fidelity, romance, and shared devotion.
