@Somesaylezzels Okay wow literally YES. Pediatric psych nurse here, and the amount of times I have heard this from my patients is SO unsettling. Once a kid has been to a psych unit for legitamite reasons, parents start to leverage it as a punishment in the future.

@ashlounicorn420 @jacobccfisher I agree 110%. Police aren’t trained in de-escalation techniques for people who aren’t neurotypical, whether that be someone with autism or in acute psychiatric crisis. We need to have more options for our communities other than the police, or things like this will keep happening.

@ashlounicorn420 @jacobccfisher It’s common for them to call the police to get some extra hands there if needed, and if the kid can’t be de-escalated then bringing them to a specialized place with trained individuals who can more easily connect with and help the child in that moment, like an acute psych center

In defense of this mom, parents of kiddos with autism call the police on their kids all the time - if the child is becoming violent towards themselves/others during a meltdown and the mom is a single parent, or has other kids in danger, etc, 1/2
