AfriForum challenges SAPS over DNA request in school r*pe case

AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit has called on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to provide concrete evidence linking Jaco Pieterse, principal of Bergview College in Matatiele, to the r*pe of a seven-year-old girl on school premises. The incident allegedly occurred on October 14, 2024.

In a letter dated February 17, 2025, AfriForum argued that SAPS’s request for a buccal (DNA) sample from Pieterse amounted to an "abuse of process," as he was not officially listed as a suspect and no evidence confirmed that the assault happened at the school.

The organization further criticized the informal manner of the request, which they claim was driven by the victim’s mother a SAPS employee.

Pieterse, they added, was willing to cooperate within legal parameters.

The case has since ignited controversy. On March 28, 2025, the Eastern Cape Department of Education deregistered Bergview College, citing its failure to maintain a safe environment and Pieterse’s perceived lack of cooperation with authorities. Public outrage grew under the #JusticeForCwecwe movement, pressuring law enforcement to act.

AfriForum maintains that SAPS has overreached without substantial proof against Pieterse. However, critics argue that his initial reluctance to provide DNA despite later complying raises concerns about transparency and accountability, particularly given his leadership role at the school.

Six suspects apprehended for R400 million Eskom and Sasol tender fraud scheme

Six suspects have been apprehended by the Hawks for their alleged involvement in a R400 million fraud scheme connected to tenders at Eskom and Sasol dating back to 2017. The accused, namely Mark Smith (61), Alex Roditis (45), Vanessa Chungu (43), Raymond Crozier (62), Guy Le Roux (56), and Ronald Hoy, are facing charges related to falsifying financial records, presenting fictitious shareholder agreements, and partaking in fronting practices that contravene the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) Act.

Implicated companies in the scandal include NJM Treatment and NDE Services, Dasmar Engineering, and Thermo Jet. Following their appearance in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court, the suspects were granted bail set at R20,000 each. The Hawks have disclosed that the accused admitted to providing fraudulent information to Eskom and Sasol, resulting in the termination of NJM's services.

A Hawks spokesperson stated that the potential financial loss to both entities surpassed R400 million. The case has now been adjourned to November 29 for the purpose of disclosing docket contents as the investigation proceeds to uncover the full extent of the fraudulent activities and the complicity of the arrested individuals in defrauding Eskom and Sasol.
