I'm 38.

Until just 5~6 years ago, I was making half of minimum wage

Now, I am known as Top talent in Tech (NA) - C levels in Startups or Exec in Public companies.

Currently I am working as Head of Product & Engineering at Series A Startup

I went though a lot past 10 yrs+ to get here

[ The beginning ]
Graduated as Computer Engineer and got a job in SF. Soon I realized this is not for me and decided to go back to school and go into research.

Everyone told me I am crazy to throw away 6 figure job at a age of 23

I went back to school regardless.

During the masters, I stumbled into entrepreneurship and fell in love.

Everyone called me crazy, again.

[ For the first few years ]

I had the student debt on my back and my company was going no where.

I was not ready to give up.

• Average of 4hr sleeps with no holidays/weekends
• Worked 14hrs+ everyday
• Bunch of part time jobs
• No money for Subway
• 1 hour bicycle ride (Rain or Snow)
• Quit smoking <-- Couldn't afford
• Accumulated a lot of credit card debts
• Lots of hair lost
• No partying, No dating, No social

My friends at Big Tech were becoming managers.

Buying a house. Getting a Porshce.

I was still a dead broke idiot who is holding onto nothing

My dad used to ask
'So, when are you getting a real job?'

[ Fast forward 10 years and this is what I accomploshed ]

• Found 3 companies in Movies, Sports and Mental Health (AI)
• Bootstrapped to 1M ARR, Raised 10M+
• 1 Failed, 1 Still going, 1 Exit
• 10s of side projects in varies industry
• Home schooling, online dating, beauty industry, cloud accounting, dev tools, productivity tools, etc. You name it
• Worked on VC side
• Mentored/advised 100+ companies
•Advisor in Incubator / Accelerators

[ This is where I am now ]

• Known as Top talent in Tech (NA)
• Head in Startups, Exec in Public companies
• Offered as First Product person with Big names (nondisclosure but from companies / people you know)
• People say I have 2~3x experiences of my age vs to an average person
• Many of my friends who joined big tech or corporate early come to me for advice or ask for help (Yes, the ones who bought the house early and the one who had Porsche!)

What I am trying to say is

• It is not an easy path
• Challenges are feeling powerless is expected
• It takes a lot of hard work and long time
• I definitely don't recommend working 14+ hours or 4hrs/day sleeps 🤣

But if you keep working and keep learning, you will get better at it.

If you can get better at it, you will get there.

One thing I can say with confidence is that I really gave all I had. If I had to re-live that time, I wouldn't be able to give more than what I gave then.
(Probably I can do things more smartly 🤣)

So give your all. There is no such thing as 'hacks' that Twitter Gurus tell you.

It is not that winners survive.
It is the survivors who become winners.
