Our third graders just finished their unit on narrative nonfiction. We read about Tony Sarg who created the balloons for the Macy’s parade. To celebrate our unit students got to make their own balloons to parade around the school!
@Ms_Israilov @DrPorcher I agree, this is a huge part of our responsibility. We are lucky to be in a position where we are learning now about what biases we may carry to work on them before entering a classroom full time.
@eepainton @DrPorcher I feel like as a white citizen, I definitely have an even more extended luxury allowing me to sit back when I am not affected. It is so crucial for me to see situations from others' points of view, even when I am not affected, to see how someone else may be.
@DrPorcher A2: As an educator, I have a responsibility to my students who may face anti-Black violence, to do whatever I can to ensure my students feel represented & safe in my classroom. To be an educator against anti-Blackness is to work on my biases to better support my students
@ddowning24 @DrPorcher I completely agree that there is only acceptance of white mainstream English in the education system. This makes this conversation so important, so we as future educators can try to break down this systematic pressure.
@missbogusz @DrPorcher I think this is a great point. We have been programmed to believe that white mainstream English is the only way to speak and that if someone does not speak this way they need to be "fixed" or are deemed less intelligent.
@miss_rosofsky @DrPorcher @dr_s_bertrand @aprilbakerbell I love your connection to Dr. April Baker-Bell, I think she gave us a lot of insight into Black English and the importance of not penalizing it.
@DrPorcher A1: My growing awareness of anti-Blackness helps me reevaluate classroom spaces & interrupt any situation where it may be prevalent. I must address my own biases & make sure my teaching doesn't exhibit behaviors of anti-Blackness.
@DrPorcher @dr_s_bertrand Good morning!! My name is Shannon and I am an Elementary Education and English major at The College of New Jersey! #ELE301#TCNJedulions#teacheredumatters
Today @MissRetkwa and I taught a lesson in honor of SEL (social emotional learning) day on dealing with change. Students got to write a change they’ve experienced/experiencing in their life on a sticky note and put it on the board! They got to discuss their feelings as a class!
