@JAldrichPL@lionel_c_briand A corollary (from my stance as EiC of ACM TOCE): journal pace and review quality in CS is lower than it could be because we invest so much in the overhead and rush of inferior conference review processes. If we invested our time in journals instead, imagine what they could be!
I believe that there are only two PhD student superpowers:
(1) being willing and able to read loads of papers, and extracting meaningful input for their own work
(2) being able to gracefully receive even negative feedback, and extracting meaningful input for their own work
