Two good things about Bryan Johnson: first, I sympathize deeply with the desire to slow aging. Second, whatever one thinks of his methods, he has undeniably brought public attention to our field.
That gives us an opportunity: we can explain the real scientific progress—and gently distinguish it from the noise. In nearly every interview I gave, I said that my greatest fear was that Bryan Johnson would die. Not because I wished him ill, obviously, but because some of the combinations and interventions seemed risky. I worried that if anything happened to him, people would conclude: “Well, if Bryan Johnson couldn’t make it, these aging researchers certainly can’t.”
I truly did not mean to become a prophet. But now, apparently, I have been promoted from geroscientist to Cassandra—with a much worse skincare routine.
