As we went from neutral world into negative world, it became extremely popular within evangelicalism to assert "this is good, actually" because soft persecution and an oppositional culture would mean conversions were more genuine.

It became a trope that the fire of affliction makes the church more pure.

Never did anyone analyze this from historical perspective of where dramatic cultural decline was actually good for the church anywhere. There is no good example historically of a society getting worse and the church getting better.

When a church faces any kind of persecution you have many who submit to its demands. Cultural decline means apostasy within the church even more than it means those who convert have negative incentive to do so and therefore theirs are genuine. Pastors and leaders conform to the oppositional culture far more than professors become more genuine. I don't think I have to provide any examples for you of this; we all see them everywhere.

This kind of thinking perfectly parallels accelerationism politically. No, things do not get better as things get worse. Everything gets worse; even the things you think will get better.

What is needed in both cases is men of adamantine will to stand for what is good, true, and beautiful.

Christianity changed the world.

It changed the world so radically that in the countries of the West, most people think that the values and principles by which we live are simply natural.

They're not natural.

They're the result of the radical changes that the Christian gospel brought to our lands. It changed our culture; it changed the way we value and treat women; it changed the way we value and treat children.

You can see the evidence for yourself. It's right before your eyes. Look at the places where the Christian foundations of our civilization are being dismantled, despised, destroyed. See how women and children are being treated. See how human live is being valued.

What you're seeing is a small beginning of the return to how life used to be before our our culture was transformed by the gospel. The more we collectively turn our backs on God, the greater the horrors, injustices, and total disregard for human rights, the value of human life, and the dignity of the weak and the vulnerable.

He looked at the field.

The field is on a 30-degree slope in Devon. The topsoil is clay. The drainage is complicated. No tractor has successfully operated in the lower section without becoming a story people tell in the village pub.

Keith looked at us.

Keith, do you believe this field could produce food crops without you on it?

Keith walked to the lower section of the field. He ate a thistle. He stepped on a bramble runner and ate that too. He looked at the clay in the corner where it waterlogged every winter and produced nothing except rushes, which Keith also ate.

Are you saying the field is only productive because you're on it?

Keith looked at us with the expression of an animal that has grasped the argument entirely and found the question slightly beneath him.

He then left through the gate he had opened by himself.

He was in the road for nine minutes.

He ate a passing cyclist's energy bar.

The figure of the nerdy atheist only emerged with Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking. And the result is that contemporary science is stagnant due to nerdy positivism.
