An intelligence driven operation between Kuilsriver Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit and Cape Nature, led to the arrest of a 28-year-old man on Friday, 12 June 2026, for the possession of venomous scorpions.
The members responded to information they received about a person who is in possession of scorpions at the Cape Town International Airport. A description of the suspect was obtained and the suspect was apprehended. His luggage bags were searched and 150 live scorpions were found between his clothing. He was arrested under the Nature and Environmental Ordinance Act, being in possession of a wild animal. The value of the scorpions is yet to be determined. The scorpions were transported to a haven for safe keeping.

A 28-year-old man was arrested at Cape Town International Airport on Friday, 12 June 2026, after authorities discovered 150 live venomous scorpions hidden in his luggage. The arrest followed an intelligence-driven operation conducted by the Kuilsriver Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit in partnership with Cape Nature.
Members acted on information about a person allegedly in possession of scorpions at the airport. After obtaining a description of the suspect, officers located and apprehended him. A search of his luggage bags led to the discovery of 150 live scorpions concealed among his clothing.
The suspect was arrested under the Nature and Environmental Ordinance Act for being in possession of a wild animal. Authorities said the value of the scorpions has not yet been determined. The recovered scorpions were transported to a place of safety for safekeeping following the operation.
The man is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 15 June 2026. Authorities have not yet disclosed further details regarding the investigation, while the seized scorpions remain in safekeeping pending the outcome of the case.

#sapsGP [TWO LIVE CROCODILES SEIZED FROM A RESIDENCE IN SPRINGS] On Monday 25/05, members from Tshwane K9 Unit, Gauteng Department of Environment, Vereeniging Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit, Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital and Springs Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) swooped on a residence in Springs after receiving information that two tortoises and two crocodiles were kept without the required permits an application for a search warrant was made and approved at Springs Magistrate’s Court to enter and search the mentioned property.
The crocodiles were seized and handed over to Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital for medical treatment and housing.
A criminal case was opened at SAPS Springs for Contravention of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act for Keeping of Threatened or Protected Species without a permit. Investigation continues.

#sapsNW [ENVIRONMENTAL CRIMES: ENDANGERED TORTOISE RESCUED BY KLERKSDORP FLASH COMMANDER] An endangered Leopard tortoise, suspected to be between 50 and 70 years old, was rescued by Captain Elize van Schalkwyk, Commander of the Klerksdorp Firearm, Liquor and Second-Hand Goods (FLASH) Unit, during an inspection at an illegal shebeen in Wilken Street on Thursday afternoon, 21/05.
According to information received, Captain van Schalkwyk visited the illegal liquor premises after following-up on information received and arrested a 51-year-old suspect for allegedly dealing in liquor without a licence. While inspecting the premises, she discovered the tortoise chained to the ground, without food or water. Consequently, the suspect was also charged with contravention of Section 2(1) of the Animal Protection Act, Act 71 of 1962.
Nature Conservation officials were immediately informed, and the tortoise was handed over shortly after its rescue to Kelly Meintjies, a field officer from Nature Conservation.
Members of the public who may be in possession of an unauthorized tortoise are urged to surrender it immediately to avoid fines or prosecution. The safest drop-off points are the local NSPCA or an authorised wildlife rehabilitation centre.
Anyone who suspects illegal possession or trade of tortoises is encouraged to report the matter to the Wildlife Crime Information Network via WhatsApp on 079 643 9556 or report it to the nearest police station.
