The Constitution of Ghana can be changed through a process of amendment. This process is set out in Chapter 25 of the Constitution.

There are two main types of amendments: entrenched and non-entrenched. Entrenched amendments are more difficult to make, as they require a referendum in addition to a two-thirds majority vote in Parliament. Non-entrenched amendments can be made by a two-thirds majority vote in Parliament alone.

To amend the Constitution, the following steps must be taken:

A bill to amend the Constitution must be introduced in Parliament.

The bill must be passed by a two-thirds majority vote in Parliament.

If the bill is to amend an entrenched provision, it must be submitted to a referendum.

The referendum must be approved by at least 40% of all registered voters, and by at least 75% of the total votes cast.

If the referendum is approved, the President must assent to the bill, and it becomes law.

The Constitution also sets out certain provisions that cannot be amended at all. These provisions include the provisions on the sovereignty of the people, the separation of powers, and the fundamental human rights and freedoms of Ghanaians.

The process of amending the Constitution is designed to ensure that it can be changed to meet the needs of the changing times, while also protecting the core values and principles of the Constitution.

Here are some examples of how the Constitution of Ghana has been changed in the past:

In 1996, an amendment was made to extend the term of office of the President from four to five years.

In 2000, an amendment was made to create the position of Vice-President.

In 2012, an amendment was made to introduce a new system of proportional representation for parliamentary elections.

The process of amending the Constitution can be complex and time-consuming, but it is an important safeguard for the democratic process in Ghana.
