A message of congratulations from the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Unisa to Judge Navi Pillay
On behalf of the University of South Africa (Unisa) Management and its broader epistemic community, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Judge Navanethem Pillay on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
This distinguished recognition honours a remarkable herstorical journey, from challenging apartheid to serving in some of the world’s most consequential judicial and human rights institutions. Her life and work stand as a testament to the enduring power of courage, principle and an unwavering commitment to human dignity.
Unisa is proud of its association with Judge Pillay, whose contribution to our intellectual community was reaffirmed earlier this year when she delivered the keynote address at our International Women’s Day celebration. Her call for justice, accountability and the protection of the rights of women and girls speaks directly to the values that must underpin a more just and equitable society.
Her achievement is an inspiration to Africa and the world, particularly to generations of women and young people who are shaping the future of justice, leadership and human rights.
We celebrate this herstorical achievement and salute a distinguished South African whose life and work continue to make a profound contribution to humanity.

The next digital divide won't be about connectivity alone.
It will be about who has access to intelligent, programmable networks capable of supporting AI, automation, edge computing, and real-time applications.
Connectivity is becoming the foundation. Intelligence is becoming the differentiator.
AI capabilities are advancing exponentially by some measures. Infrastructure builds more linearly. Organizations can take years to change.
The result: bottlenecks, risks, and opportunities.

The hackathon is attended by Unisa students from various disciplines including Sciences, IT, Computing and Law.

Signed into law in 2024, the Public Procurement Act was meant to unify how state departments handle contracts and tenders. The ConCourt has declared it invalid, ruling that parliament failed to properly consult the public on material changes made to the bill.

Some academics teach you what to think. Others teach you how to think.
In this edition of Meet the Mind, we profile Dr Colene Hind, whose work challenges neat answers and makes space for complexity, curiosity and context.
From strategy and supervision to the realities of South African organisations, her scholarship reminds us that meaningful leadership begins with the courage to observe, question and resist oversimplification.

The panel discussion moved beyond identifying barriers to asking what meaningful inclusion should look like in practice.
From workplace flexibility for young mothers and the integration of sexual and reproductive health and rights into corporate wellness, to ensuring that women are supported across every sphere of professional life, the conversation called for institutions to turn inclusion into everyday practice.
