[CSET INTERNATIONALISATION EFFORTS] Today #UnisaCSETs Institute for Catalysis & Energy Solutions (ICES) hosted a seminar titled “Engineering Metal Interfaces for Sustainable Energy and Electronics - From Aqueous Zinc Batteries to Copper Bonding”. This seminar was presented by Prof Tetsu Yonezawa, a Professor in the Division of Materials Science and Engineering at Hokkaido University, Japan.
His research focuses on advanced nanomaterials, nanoparticle synthesis, catalysis-related materials, hybrid functional materials, and low-temperature materials processing for energy and electronic applications. His visit to our Science Campus forms part of @unisa internationalisation efforts to expand global engagement and collaboration.

“In principle, for development to be truly complete, the perspectives of every group must be taken into consideration. The way we approach science as Africans, while also factoring in cultural perspectives, brings unique insights and value that other continents may not have.”- Prof James Chibueze, our last plenary speaker for the day.

Currently happening, our Postdoc fellows, Dr McArthur Fundira, Dr Rapelang Motsoeneng, Dr Ismaila T. Bello and Dr Christelle Sekadjie, are presenting their research and innovation work through insightful oral presentations. Their contributions have been highly informative, thought-provoking, and a true reflection of the impactful research taking place within our college.

Distinguished Professor Ilunga Alain Kamika is our third plenary and he shares valuable insights on wastewater genomics in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. He’s one of our recent DSTI NRF SARCHi holders.

Prof Patience Mthunzi-Kufa, our second plenary speaker, presented exciting work on the intersection of photonics, AI, and machine learning. This research aims to provide solutions for health, agriculture, water quality, and security. Currently, she leads the Centre Photonics at #UnisaCSET.
#UnisaRandiweek
The first plenary at today’s #UnisaCSET’s take of the #UnisaRandiWeek is presented by Prof Paul Westerhoff from Arizona State University. Some key takeaways from his talk titled “Atmospheric water harvesting”:
1. Water demand is rising due to population growth, urbanisation, and industrial needs; especially in water-scarce regions.
2. Traditional solutions (pipelines, canals, desalination) are effective but often high-cost, energy-intensive, and centralized.
3. We’ve become very good at evaporating water; the challenge is mastering its recovery.
4. Atmospheric water harvesting offers a promising alternative: extracting water directly from air, without pipelines or large infrastructure.
5. Innovation in materials and systems design is rapidly advancing this field, with growing startup and industry investment.
6. The future will rely on a diverse water portfolio; combining centralized systems with decentralized, “pipeless” solutions.
The big shift: moving from “moving water” to “creating water where it’s needed.”

“Today, we stand in a very different space where our research output has grown significantly; moving from modest beginnings to producing over 2,000 publications in recent years. This is not just a number; it represents a shift in culture, commitment, and capability. But as we celebrate these achievements, we must ask ourselves an important question:
What is the purpose of our research? Our Research must transform lives, enhance livelihoods, and inform decision-making.
It must guide policymakers, support industry, and empower communities.” - Prof Simiso Dube, Deputy Dean #UnisaCSET
