The Howard County Council unanimously approved a temporary ban on data centers Monday.

Vice Chair Christiana Rigby introduced legislation prohibiting the construction of new data center projects in the county until more information on their impact is analyzed. It’s especially needed, she said, because the county hasn’t updated its zoning regulations governing data processing and telecommunications since 1993.

Current regulations reflect a “smaller-scale, lower-intensity form of development” that differs from modern data centers, according to the legislation.

Last week, AOC joined More Perfect Union on a trip to Morgan County, Georgia, where she met with residents living near a site that will host a massive Meta data center.

Residents haven't had clean well water since the construction project began.
