Matipandile Sotheni, the man accused of being the trigger man in the assassination of Marius van der Merwe, also known as Witness D in the Madlanga Commission, was a trained police special task force member.

He has been in the private sector since 2019 where his skill set has been in high demand. Up until October 2024, he was employed as a bodyguard by a well known tobacco baron, but was dismissed.

Since the end of 2024, Matipandile Sotheni was linked to the #ZamaZama illicit gold trade, which is where he in all probability crossed paths with Marius van der Merwe. Marius van der Merwe was part of a @carteblanchetv insert into #ZamaZamas. Marius van der Merwe was engaged in a grey area allegedly being in the centre of warring #ZamaZama factions and was even at a stage implicated in the destruction of the informal settlement known as “Plastic City”.

There seems to be a convergence on the East Rand of bad actors that have involved themselves in the ongoing turf wars between #ZamaZama bosses.

It is exceptionally concerning that we are seeing the high demand for the skill set of the exceptionally well trained members of the police special task force. Lest we forget that East Rand and Pretoria crime boss, Vusi “Cat” Matlala, confidant of EMPD suspended chief, Julius Mkhwanazi, hired ex police special task force members to protect him and his illegal blue light brigade, and allegedly used these members to settle scores.

1/2 Ten vehicles used to smuggle illicit cigarettes from Zimbabwe to SA. The vehicles were driving in convoy on the N1 from Musina to Makhado, Limpopo.
Police, acting on info, caught up with the vehicles along Piesanghoek Road. A high-speed chase followed. Five cars seized.

The driver tried to escape but the truck rolled and the driver lost his life.

Another massive load of illegal cigarettes seized in Lenasia, south of JHB. Products belonging to GLTC Zim. Four arrested: Two Zimbabweans and two Bangladeshi nationals. Seems half the load was already delivered.

Five suspects arrested. The police officers who escorted the loads apparently fled in two vehicles- one of them a marked police van.

These are very serious and concerning allegations! We have long cautioned against this particular fellow, and confronted him with regards to his propaganda to suit the commercial interests of multinationals in the local tobacco industry. We would not be surprised in the least.

We are just as curious @Abramjee. We do know that one multinational has had a number of outstanding issues with @sarstax exceeding billions of Rands. Perhaps Commissioner @EdKieswetter will divulge the full particulars of what was touched on in the budget speech in due course.
