Yet robotaxis will remove the UK licensed, trained and present driver.
If you replace a licensed profession, the public safety bar shouldn’t fall.

Most problems in taxi & private hire licensing aren’t caused by bad intent.
They’re caused by fragmented processes and missed reminders.

@seanpaulday@TransportCttee@DrScottArthurMP@Uber The answer is to exclusively connect taxis to tier 1 work like NHS and SEND transport, which require training and accessibility. PHVs should only access tier 2 stuff (normal work). Taxis should access both tiers: https://t.co/wDa2IYEJqp

Taxi numbers aren't reducing because of the cost of accessible vehicles, it's structural: Mobility-Exchange_The-great-displacement-protecting-taxis-requires-structural-reform-not-nostalgia_ME_Oct-2025.pdf https://t.co/wDa2IYEJqp

New from Mobility Exchange: taxis are being displaced by structural design, not nostalgia. PHVs grow while taxi numbers stay flat, and Tier 1 public service mobility like SEND and NEPTS is not connected to the vehicles best suited to deliver it.

MAXiCab Accessibility https://t.co/lxW2rabqi9
Wouldn’t it be great if London cab drivers were able to provide the same safety standards for all wheelchair users like they can in other cities where alternative taxis are available that offer greater levels of accessibility?
London cabbies are amongst the best in the world, but they can only work with what’s available to them.
What’s more important - the safety of a passenger with a disability or being able to turn in 28’?

@londontaxi_pr Absolutely. No criticism of your approach at all, just some thoughts on how we might address the decline. Seems likely numbers will continue to drop before stabilising.
@londontaxi_pr If you’re 18 now, thinking of 3 years study to get a badge at 21, you want to be sure that you’ve got a job for as long as you want it. Then the investment makes sense.
@londontaxi_pr Flexibility is a huge part of why people do it but these days there are lots of flexible roles. Doesn’t really differentiate enough from PHV either. The risks are still there and misunderstood (AV’s, security etc). People need to be shown beyond that to how the job will survive.
@TheLTDA@guidoacasa@spkenny67 Fair shout but it doesn’t follow that this then rules out motorisation and the trade should be realistic about that prospect. Not saying it causes huge issues but a properly regulated plying for hire service could be popular for many short journeys.
