Something deeply troubling is happening here in Bonn at #SB64 — and we need to talk about it. A thread on the systematic shrinking of civic space at climate negotiations. 🧵
For 30 years, @CANIntl has held a daily 11:30am press conference throughout UN climate talks. Every single day. Rain or shine. It's how over 2,500 civil society organisations share a collective assessment of what's actually happening inside these rooms.
‘‘Shifting Power Quarterly’’ SB64 Edition is OUT 📢
Welcome to the second edition of our climate magazine, this time produced in Bonn, Germany 🇩🇪, as part of our coverage of the African and Global South agenda at the June climate talks.
The newsletter poses a critical question to the conference:
‘‘Can humanity act collectively in the face of a challenge that respects no border, ideology, or level of development?”
Read some high-level analyses and experiences of diverse actors from Africa 🌍on what is at stake for the continent in Bonn.

What a disgrace, that @FIFAcom has allowed Trump to ban Omar Artan, one of the best referees, from officiating at the World Cup simply because he is Somali.
This reflects the structural bias against black & brown people. Instead of conceding to the discrimination Fifa could have moved him to games played in Mexico or Canada & called out the outright racism.
The problem isn’t just Trump, it’s also Fifa President Gianni Infantino.
It is galling that they (rightly) banned Russia for invading Ukraine, but then go onto reward Trump’s US as hosts which are now denying one of Africa’s best officials.
Banning an official for simply his nationality in what should be a unifying global moment, underscores the sorry state of world governance, not just of football.
It is a slap in the face & must be called out. Racism.
7/ The solution is straightforward.
Restore the daily CAN press briefing that has existed for decades.
There is space. CAN was given a daily slot at larger and busier climate summits in previous years.
The health of the climate process should be measured not only by what governments say in negotiating rooms, but by how much space exists for scrutiny, accountability and public participation.

1/ Update on the @UNFCCC press conference scandal at #SB64.
After concerns were raised by civil society, the UNFCCC has allocated Climate Action Network (CAN) two additional press conference slots.
That's welcome. But it still doesn't solve the problem. 🧵
6/ Civil society is not a side event to the climate process.
It plays a vital role in bringing the voices of frontline communities, Indigenous peoples, youth groups and climate-vulnerable countries into the public conversation around the talks.

5/ I've seen many tactics used over the years to slow down climate ambition. But chipping away at the infrastructure of transparency is one of the most insidious — because it happens quietly, dressed up as logistics.
POWER UPDATE | Rich countries say they met their climate finance goal again in 2024.
But there’s a catch.
According to the OECD report, 67% of the $136.7 billion mobilised in climate finance in 2024 took the form of loans.
@Mohadow shared these thoughts: “The rich world profits from the loans it provides to poor countries that are desperately trying to deal with climate change caused by the rich world. It’s a total scandal.”
Loans force vulnerable countries to borrow money to navigate a crisis they did little to create. Real climate finance, rooted in justice, should come in the form of grants.
« Santa Marta sent a clear signal that Bonn must build on: the future lies not in deeper fossil dependence, but in building a just and sovereign energy transition » says @mohadow@PowerShftAfrica in this recent op-ed 👇
My latest op-ed for the Mail & Guardian on why Trump's grab of Venezuelan oil is yet another example of fossil fuels being a curse, not a blessing - No one ever invaded a country to seize their wind turbines.

The world no longer needs more promises — but proof that multilateralism still works.
If COP30 is to be remembered as the Implementation COP, it must also be the moment we re-anchor climate action in fairness, solidarity & accountability.

Africa goes to Belém with a shared vision & a clear demand: COP30 must move us from promises to practice.
More than a decade after Paris, climate diplomacy must now deliver real results.

At COP30, we need binding finance & tech transfer — not warm words.
This summit must:
✅ Triple adaptation finance
✅ Operationalise Article 9.1 as a legal duty
✅ Unlock clean tech for the Global South
✅ Implement a Just Transition for all
