Alarming and Increasing Landslides on the Mussoorie Dehradun Route:

We need to ask this hard question again and again why landslides have increased so rapidly on the VIP Mussoorie Dehradun route?

Rampant destruction of the mountains, unabated real estate driven development, hotels, resorts, maggi points, lack of drainage, massive deforestation, limited outlet for water discharge, blatant overtourism, alleged corruption at and through the highest levels, collusion, approval for all construction by MDDA, apathy of PWD and many other reasons are destroying this road.

Let me share another piece of information related to Mussoorie. A new road is being planned to ferry tourists to Mussoorie. It will be 42 KM long and entail the likely felling of 18000 to 20000 trees. Experts like Wadia Institute and many others have repeatedly warned that large parts of Uttarakhand are most vulnerable to landslides. We now have the Nepal tragedy. So why this hypocrisy of shedding a tear or two and then going all out to destroy the forest and the hills?

Finally, climate change and rainfall should not be used as excuses. While these are factors, it is man made decisions by govts, businesses and all of us as ordinary citizens that is destroying our hills, one bit at a time. This landslide is a prime example of human graft, collusion, apathy and insensitivity.
