Modern science cannot explain many aspects of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The image shows no sign of deterioration after 500 years. The tilma or cloak of Juan Diego on which the image of Our Lady has been imprinted, is a coarse fabric made from the threads of the maguey cactus. This fiber disintegrates within 15 years.

There is no under sketch, no sizing and no protective over-varnish on the image.

Microscopic examination revealed that there were no brush strokes.

The image seems to increase in size and change colors due to an unknown property of the surface and substance of which it is made.

According to Kodak of Mexico, the image is smooth and feels like a modern day photograph.  (Produced 300 years before the invention of photography.)

The image has consistently defied exact reproduction, whether by brush or camera.

Several images can be seen reflected in the eyes of the Virgin. It is believed to be the  images of Juan Diego, Bishop Juan de Zummaraga, Juan Gonzales, the interpreter, and others.

The distortion and place of the images are identical to what is produced in the normal eye, which is impossible to obtain on a flat surface.

The stars on Our Lady's Mantle coincide with the constellation in the sky on December 12, 1531.

All who have scientifically examined the image of Our Lady over the centuries confess that its properties are absolutely unique and inexplicable.

The Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is actually an Aztec Pictograph that was read and understood readily by the Aztec Indians, functioning as a visual catechesis.

THE LADY STOOD IN FRONT OF THE SUN: She was greater than their dreaded sun-god "Huitzilopochtli".

HER FOOT RESTED ON THE CRESCENT MOON: She had clearly vanquished their foremost deity, the feather serpent "Quetzalcoatl."

THE STARS STREWN ACROSS THE MANTLE: She was greater than the stars of heaven that they worshipped.  She was a virgin and the Queen of the heavens for Virgo rests over her womb and the northern crown upon her head. She appeared on December 12, 1531 for the stars that she wore are the constellation of stars that appeared in the sky that day!

THE BLUE-GREEN HUE OF HER MANTLE: She was a Queen for she wears the color of royalty.

THE BLACK CROSS ON THE BROOCH AT HER NECK: Her God was that of the Spanish Missionaries, Jesus Christ her son.

THE BLACK BELT: She was with child for she wore the Aztec Maternity Belt.

THE FOUR-PETAL FLOWER OVER THE WOMB: She was the "Mother of God." The flower was a special symbol of life, movement and deity-the center of the universe.

HER HANDS ARE JOINED IN PRAYER: She was not God but clearly there was one greater than Herself and she pointed her finger to the cross on her brooch.

THE DESIGN ON HER ROSE COLORED GARMENT: She is the "Queen of the Earth" for she is wearing a map of Mexico telling the Indians exactly where the apparition took place.

FORMER CALVINIST SCHOLAR: THE CATHOLIC CHURCH GOT IT RIGHT ON “FAITH ALONE” AND WORKS

Dr. David Anders is an absolute treasure. I’ve mentioned him many times before. He played a very important role in my own conversion, precisely because of how thorough his own study of the “reformers” and the Church Fathers had been.

He grew up Calvinist, and later decided to pursue his PhD in Historical Theology to prove the “reformation” and disprove the Catholic Faith. Over about 10 years, he read every word of Calvin, St. Augustine, and a great deal from other “reformers” and Church Fathers.

He did his homework in a way few people do.

He came out the other side thoroughly convinced the Church had been right all along—a place he did NOT want to be (at first).

It was an absolutely grueling process. Like myself (and many converts), he was initially DEPRESSED when he discovered the Catholic Faith was true.

It is difficult to convey to people how shattering this is after spending your life in a religion at least somewhat predicated on its rejection of the Catholic Faith and Church.

In this short 8 minute clip (link in post below), he summarizes his discoveries with respect to “faith alone.” He explains, briefly, why the Catholic doctrine was:

1. Rational;
2. Biblical;
3. Historical; and
4. Existentially satisfying.

Dr. Anders fully understood the protestant position on these matters.

He realized it had been weighed in the balance, and found wanting.

On December 8, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a holy day of obligation. The object of the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is how Mary, as a creature, experiences the redemption wrought by her Divine Son.

The Church teaches that from the first moment of her conception, God imparted to Mary the redeeming grace of Jesus before the Redemption unfolded in human history, to prevent her from contracting the contagion of original sin, so that she—as the new Eve created in a state of holiness—would always be united to God and provide a worthy tabernacle on earth for God’s Son. Thus Mary, by her ‘prevenient Redemption’, is celebrated as the first of the redeemed. Mary is the perfect package for the perfect gift.

Gabriel's title for Mary, which is poetically translated "full of grace" is a revelation of this gift from God.

The doctrine of the Immaculate Conception can be found in Scripture: Genesis 3:15, which indicates that the mother of the Redeemer would be completely separated from Satan; Luke 1:28, which demonstrates that God placed Mary in a state of grace prior to Gabriel's announcement; and Revelation 12:13-14, which shows that the Evil One could not touch the new Eve—all demonstrate God's providence in protecting Mary from any stain of sin.

“In the first place, the foundation of this doctrine is to be found in Sacred Scripture...Now, if at any time the Blessed Mary were destitute of Divine grace even for the briefest moment, because of contamination in her conception by the hereditary stain of sin, there would not have come between her and the serpent that perpetual enmity spoken of from earliest tradition...Moreover, since the same holy Virgin is saluted 'full of grace' and 'blessed among women' (Luke I. 28, 24), by these words, as Catholic tradition has always interpreted, it is plainly indicated that 'by this singular and solemn salutation, otherwise never heard of, it is shown that the Mother of God was the abode of all Divine graces...'".
