In partnership with @MusanzeDistrict, @Gasabo_District and @Nyarugenge with funding from @amplifyfund , we walked alongside Deaf young mothers, teenage mothers and single mothers — many of whom had never learned Rwanda Sign Language (RSL) and had left school early.
This month, as we celebrate International Week of the Deaf 2026 (#IWDP2026) under the theme “Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights,” we are proud to share their progress.
Deaf young mothers who once could not explain their own health needs now discuss family planning confidently in RSL and freely access services at @Yego_Kimisagara and @MusanzeYouth.
Several others have formed a support circle to learn about Rwanda’s development programmes and how they can actively take part in them.
Through RSL, their health rights are understood, their voices are heard, and they are no longer left behind.
Real stories. Real rights declared.

Together, let's ensure Rwandan Sign Language opens every door to rights!
Deaf adolescent girls and young women in Rwanda have so much to contribute — and when we make sign language fully accessible, we unlock their access to essential SRHR services.
A gentle reminder of what stands in the way — so we can remove it together:
Ableism: The outdated idea that typical abilities are "better" — when in truth, every body and every mind brings unique strengths.
Audism: The preference for spoken language over sign — overlooking the beauty and power of Deaf communication and culture.
Our September 2025 Policy Brief is an open invitation full of practical ideas we can explore and implement together:
1. Transform health centres into welcoming, truly inclusive spaces for everyone.
2. Shine a light on Deaf AGYW experiences so no one stays unseen.
3. Place Deaf adolescent girls and young women's voices at the heart of decisions that affect them!
Sign language is a beautiful bridge to human rights — and when we build it together, no one is left behind.

Proud moment! @RwandaDeafwomen deeply appreciates the inspiring school project by three great Grade 8 changemakers at Green Hills Academy @GHA_rwanda.
In partnership with their parents, @GHA_rwanda and @ArtroomIfs (GS Institut Filippo Smaldone), @RwandaDeafwomen immersed them in Deaf culture, connected them with peers (especially Deaf girls), deepened their understanding of disability and inclusion, and donated scholastic materials + sanitary kits—driving real empowerment!
Thank you for championing inclusion together!
