In case everything here ends up collapsing
I have my dead mom's phone (I use it for some 2fa stuff ive been too lazy to change) and over a year ago it rang and I answered to my own voice going "hello mom" and then silent when I responded
@helloifailed@parfaitchoc Oh yeah the age really should be 18 across the board, that lines up with becoming a legal adult and graduating high school, we're in agreement there. But there comes a point where it's not the state's role to dictate that the relationship is illegal, even if it's morally dubious
@helloifailed@parfaitchoc Some restrictions are still placed on young adults ostensibly for public health reasons, but restricting their bodily autonomy is inherently a fraught subject, especially when it comes to matters regarding sexuality
@helloifailed@parfaitchoc Again, this comes back to the infantalization of young adults and the state/parents wanting to keep control over them. You wanting to "protect minors" by restricting the sexual rights of 18-19 year olds (people who are definitionally not minors) is a shining example
@helloifailed@parfaitchoc I'm glad we could come to this resolution. Just because you had a bad experience with someone who was three years older than you doesn't mean the state needs to come in and make such a relationship illegal.
@helloifailed@parfaitchoc You drew a clear distinction between "adults" and "teenagers" in a way that did not include 18-19 year olds in the former category
@helloifailed@parfaitchoc You're contributing to the infantalization of young adults by restricting their authority over themselves when they are at an age where they most need to grow into independent beings!
@helloifailed@parfaitchoc 18 and 19 year olds are adults! Having their autonomy restricted is damaging to them! Just because they circumstantially have "teen" in the number doesn't mean developmentally they're not adults! It's important that they're allowed to make their own decisions at this age!
@helloifailed@parfaitchoc And let's not even bring up the logistical challenges of partners with a one or two year age gap between 18-20 where one person "ages into" being past the cutoff, or already existing imagery of legal adults being reclassified as CSEM
@helloifailed@parfaitchoc You're not addressing any of my points. We're already seeing arguments that people aren't "real adults" until they're 25 bc of misunderstood research about brain development and having that used as a means to restrict medical care
@helloifailed@parfaitchoc Do you not think that young adults not being "allowed" to have sex with older people would lead to said risky behavior being made appealing purely because of the taboo?
@helloifailed@parfaitchoc Do you not think that removing sexual rights from young adults would not be a means for the state to exert control over said young adults bodies? Especially in an age where abortion and gender affirming care are being restrictes?
@helloifailed@parfaitchoc Not to mention, it opens the door for more rights to be taken away from them. "Oh they're not real adults, they can't make medical decisions for themselves"
In Mario Party, minigame descriptions treat being eliminated merely as being out of the game, except for Bumper Balls, which shifts the tone by stating the winner is the last one left alive. This implies that while other minigames might be for fun, Bumper Balls is to the death.
@helloifailed@parfaitchoc Your intentions are to protect young adults but removing rights from them at a pivotal point in their life where they are becoming independent keeps them in arrested development and contributes to a culture of shame surrounding sexuality
