Italian Franca Viola was just 15 when she became engaged to 23-year-old Filippo Melodia. However, Melodia's involvement in criminal activities led to Viola breaking off the relationship.

After Melodia's release from prison, he sought to reconcile with Viola, who had already entered into a relationship with another man. Enraged by her refusal to take him back, Melodia orchestrated Viola's kidnapping in the early hours of December 26, 1965. She was held against her will for eight days and subjected to sexual assault by Melodia during this time.

During this period in Italy, rape was considered a crime against public morality( and not against the individual), and it was customary for rapists to marry their victims. Many rape victims succumbed to this tradition due to societal pressure, as it was considered dishonorable for a woman not to marry the man who took her virginity. Furthermore, rapists were forgiven if they married their victims.

Melodia expected Viola to yield to this pressure, but she vehemently refused to marry him.

As a result, Melodia was found guilty and sentenced to ten years in prison. Viola's resilience sparked a revolution that ultimately led to the abolition of the law allowing rapists to be forgiven through marriage.

Triboulet was a jester for Louis XII, the King of France from 1498 to 1515. He is perhaps most famous for slapping the king on the butt. This act greatly angered the king, and he threatened to have Triboulet executed. After taking a moment to calm down, the king decided to spare Triboulet's life if he could think of an apology that was more offensive than what he had just done to the king.

Triboulet went on to say, "I'm so sorry, your majesty, that I didn't recognize you! I mistook you for the Queen!" While Triboulet's response was clever and indeed more offensive, it broke an order that prohibited anyone from making fun of the queen. The king decided to proceed with the execution but allowed Triboulet to choose how he would die. With his life on the line, Triboulet replied, "Good sire, for Saint Nitouche's and Saint Pansard's sake, patrons of insanity, I choose to die from old age."

The speechless king could do nothing but laugh. He canceled the execution and decided to banish Triboulet.

After the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862 , Many Civil War soldiers' lives were saved by a phenomenon they called 'Angel's Glow.' The soldiers who lay in the mud for two rainy days had wounds that began to glow in the dark.

The men had no explanation for the strange glow, but doctors soon discovered that soldiers who had reported seeing their wounds glow had a higher chance of survival than soldiers who did not. Not only that, they also seemed to have lower rates of infection. Moreover, their injuries appeared to heal much faster than their non-glowing counterparts.

In 2001, 17-year-old high school student, Bill Martin and his friend, Jonathan Curtis, won an international science fair by discovering that the soldiers had been so cold that their bodies created the perfect conditions for growing a bioluminescent bacteria, Photorhabdus luminescens, which ultimately destroyed the bad bacteria that could have killed them.

In 1960, David Latimer planted a spiderwort sprout inside of a large glass bottle, added a quarter pint of water, and then sealed it shut. He opened the bottle 12 years later in 1972 to add some water and then sealed it for good. The self-contained ecosystem has flourished for more than 60 years. The garden is a perfectly balanced and self-sufficient ecosystem. The bacteria in the compost eat the dead plants and break down the oxygen that is released by the plants, turning it into carbon dioxide, which is needed for photosynthesis. The bottle is essentially a microcosm of Earth.

In the early 1990s, Brazilian photojournalist Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado was stationed in Rwanda to cover the genocide. The experience left him traumatized.

In 1994, when he returned to his home in Minas Gerais, Brazil, Sebastião was hoping to find solace in the lush green forest of his childhood. Instead, he discovered that his home had turned into a dusty, barren land for miles and miles, devoid of any wildlife.

"The land was as sick as I was. Only about 0.5% of the land was covered in trees," he said.

It was at this time that his wife, Lélia Deluiz Wanick Salgado, proposed that they replant the entire forest. Sebastião supported the idea, and the two of them spent the next 20 years planting 2.7 million trees.

This resulted in the recovery of 1,500 acres of rainforest, and the site eventually became home to 293 plant species, 172 bird species, and 33 animal species, some of which were on the verge of extinction.

Pale Blue Dot is a photo of Earth that was taken by the Voyager 1 space probe in 1990 from a distance of about 6 billion kilometers (3.7 billion miles) as it was leaving our solar system. This is what Carl Sagan said about the photo:
