Brian Mulroney was Canada's version of Reagan and Thatcher but he was uniquely Canadian. Mulroney was the first PM to deregulate and roll back socialism in Canada after decades of rot.

Mulroney was one of Canada's greatest and most consequential prime ministers. He negotiated the FTA with the US. The Liberals and the NDP opposed it saying it would impoverish Canada when in fact it did the opposite.

He brought in the GST which was damaging electorally but it was the right thing to do because it got rid of a heavily distorting manufacturers sales tax.

Mulroney made two attempts which ultimately failed to fix the constitutional crisis that Pierre Trudeau created, when Trudeau "repatriated" the constitution without the consent of Quebec after the famous Night of the Long Knives.

And after he resigned, the Progressive Conservatives paid a huge price but his legacy benefits Canada to this day.

This famous photo of Thatcher, Regan and Mulroney represents an era which no longer exists. These were the children of Hayek and Friedman who believed in free markets and liberty. They pushed the boundaries in their respective countries.

Without Mulroney, Canada would be a much poorer and much more illiberal society than we are, with far fewer freedoms, and far fewer stuff on our shelves than we have now. If you're eating fresh vegetables and fruits in the winter, thank Mulroney.

Mulroney was one of Canada's great prime ministers and one of the last purely ideas driven politician we've had in Canada, where he did the right thing even if it didn't make electoral sense.

RIP Brian Mulroney. May his soul attain moksha or ultimate redemption and peace.
