Gen Z has truly witnessed a very stable India. Indian politicians need to recalibrate their responses accordingly. This generation just does not know what the previous generations saw and experienced. It is not their fault. Their baseline is different from ours.

OLDEST CASE FILE: THE READING ROOM PARTY, 1930
The Political Seed Later Dressed Up as “Separatism”
Picture Srinagar in 1930.
=》No Pakistan.
=》No Partition.
=》No UN resolutions.
=》No Article 370.
=》No dispute over accession.
Inside a modest room at Fateh Kadal sat a group of educated yet unemployed Kashmiri Muslim graduates. Newspapers lay scattered across the floor. Jobs were scarce, political representation was negligible, and organised political activity faced restrictions.
Among them was a young Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, who emerged as the Reading Room Party’s secretary and most powerful voice.
It looked like a reading circle.
In reality, it was becoming a political laboratory.
The members discussed discriminatory recruitment, educational backwardness, civil liberties and the absence of representative government. They challenged official employment policies and began organising public opinion against an absolute monarchy. The Reading Room became one of the earliest organised platforms of modern Kashmiri politics.
But here begins the historical fraud.
Decades later, separatist propagandists would try to present the Reading Room Party as the beginning of an “anti-India freedom struggle.”
Against which India?
Independent India did not exist. Pakistan had not even been conceived as a state. Jammu and Kashmir’s accession was still seventeen years away.
The original target was Dogra autocracy not the Indian Union.
In June 1931, political anger moved from private discussions into public meetings. Representatives were chosen to place Muslim grievances before Maharaja Hari Singh’s government. The arrest and trial of Abdul Qadeer then drew thousands to Srinagar Central Jail.
On 13 July 1931, state forces opened fire, killing roughly 21–22 Muslim protesters. The shooting became a defining moment in Kashmir’s political awakening. But the aftermath also included communal rioting in which Hindu civilians were killed and Hindu-owned shops and homes were attacked.
Honest history must acknowledge both truths:
The firing on protesters was brutal and indefensible.
Violence against innocent Hindu civilians was equally indefensible.
One tragedy cannot be remembered by erasing another.
The agitation eventually forced the administration to examine Muslim grievances through the Glancy Commission. It contributed to limited representative reforms, the establishment of the Praja Sabha in 1934 and the emergence of organised parties such as the Muslim Conference in 1932.
The Great Timeline Problem
Today’s separatist narrative wants 1931 to provide a post-dated certificate against India.
Unfortunately for that mythology, calendars still exist.
A movement demanding jobs, rights and representation under a princely monarchy cannot honestly be advertised as an uprising against a republic that had not yet been born.
That is not history.
That is political costume design taking a 1930 grievance and forcing it into a 1947 uniform.
●》The Verdict
The Reading Room Party helped inaugurate modern organised political mobilisation in Kashmir. It challenged autocracy and articulated genuine socioeconomic grievances.
It was not born as an anti-India separatist organisation.
Its history was later appropriated, simplified and weaponised by competing political camps. The real lesson of 1931 is neither blind glorification nor convenient erasure:
Respect the grievances. Record every victim. But reject the historical laundering.
Academic treatments describe 1931 as the beginning of overt political protest and the reawakening of modern Kashmiri political aspirations not straightforward anti-India separatism. University of Kashmir study, Cambridge University Press chapter, JSTOR book chapter.

I don’t want to give them any more clout, but it’s ironic to see some leftist women, who spend day after day abusing others online, suddenly playing the victim when they receive the same treatment in return.
Ironic, truly.
